Soccer- President Kufuor sends goodwill message to Satellites

Accra (Greater Accra) 04 July 2001

 

President John Agyekum Kufuor has sent a goodwill message to the management and players of the national under-20 team, Black Satellites currently in Argentina participating in the 13th FIFA World Under-20 Youth championship.

A message signed by the President congratulated the team for the impressive performance put up so far in the tournament.

The message said,  "having followed your exploits in the tournament; my admiration for your sterling performance knows no bounds".

He said the whole country was behind them sharing this feeling and constantly praying in a collective hope of another Youth World Cup.

President Kufuor wished the satellites the best of luck in their semi finals encounter against Egypt on Wednesday.

"I pray and hope that the Ghanaian fighting spirit and deep sense of patriotism will spur you on to win the trophy for the country."

He promised a hearty welcome for them on their arrival.

Journalist sues Liberty Professional for assault

Tema (Greater Accra) 04 July 2001

 

Mr Ian Motey, a Journalist with New Times Corporation, publishers of the state-owned Ghanaian Times and the Evening News, has filed a writ at a Tema High Court against Liberty Professionals Football Club, a premier division side, whose security personnel assaulted him while performing his official duties at the Tema Sports Stadium.

In the writ filed on his behalf by Mr Alfred Agbesi, a Tema based lawyer of Mawusi Chambers, on June 28, plaintiff is demanding general damages and punitive cost from the club and Mr Francis Bruce Thompson, an agent of the club.

On June 10, Mr Motey was assigned to cover the Star Premier League between the Liberty Club and Sekondi Hassacas and was assaulted at the main gate of the Stadium.

Thompson, who was on duty as a security personnel for Liberty Professionals, hooked Motey by the waist and pushed him against a wall punched and slapped him and he fell down.

Whilst on the ground Thompson continued to manhandle him. He hit Motey on the forehead, which left a deep cut and he had to be rushed to the Tema General Hospital by Mr Sly Tetteh, owner of Liberty Professionals.

A medical report confirmed the assault, which caused "a large Haematoma" on the forehead, which made him suffer physically, mentally and financially.

The claim said in the process plaintiff lost his wallet and a wristwatch while his dresses was destroyed.
