Parliament goes on recess

Accra (Greater Accra) 31 July 2000

Mr. Justice Daniel Francis Annan , Speaker of Parliament on Friday adjourned sitting "sine die" and commended Members for the good work done during the second meeting of the fourth session.

In a statement to draw the curtain on the second meeting, Mr. Justice Annan congratulated the Members who have been re-selected by their parties to contest the December elections.

To those who have been dropped from the parliamentary race, he advised them to take their "de-selection" in good faith and consider their fate as "occupational hazard in the political game".

The Speaker acknowledged the diligence of both the leadership of the House and the backbenchers during the meeting and said their sense of duty had enhanced the work of Parliament, adding that they deserve a well-earned break.

He also commended the Parliamentary Press Corps, saying the members' reports on the proceedings of the House had improved significantly.

He, however, urged the journalists to be circumspect in their work to avoid the use of "unparliamentary language" in their reportage.

Dr. Kwabena Adjei, Leader of the House noted the cordial relations between the House and the Press Corps but expressed concern about a couple of publications, which he said, had sought to lower the esteem of Parliament.

Mrs. Gladys Asmah, Deputy Minority Leader, wished Members well in their electioneering campaign

There were 47 sittings, 117 questions were responded to by Ministers and their Deputies and 80 papers, including bills, loan agreements, reports, legislative and constitutional instruments, were laid before the House.

During the period, 22 statements, 14 by Members, five by Ministers/Deputy Ministers and three by Speaker/Deputy Speakers, were made, while there were five messages from the President to Parliament.
