Farmer to die for killing nephew
Sekondi (Western Region) 31 July 2000
A Sekondi High Court, by a unanimous Decision, on Friday sentenced a 45-year-old cocoa farmer, Daniel Kwaku Kyere, to death for shooting and killing his nephew Kwaku Kyere, 19, at Yareyeya, near Himakrom, in the Western Region.
Prosecuting, Mr George Kpodo, State Attorney, had earlier told the court, presided over by Mr. Justice S. K. Asiamah, that the accused was made the caretaker of a cocoa farm belonging to his sister, Abena Kyeraa.
The accused, after several cocoa seasons, refused to render account to his sister and the farm was subsequently taken away from him.
Mr. Kpodo said on April 24, 1996, the deceased went to the cocoa farm with the intention of collecting some beans for sale to enable him to learn a trade.
He was however shot as he collected the beans by the accused person who still claimed ownership of the farm.
The prosecutor added that in spite of the repeated appeals by Kyere to his uncle to spare his life, the accused continued firing at him, hitting him in the left arm, chest and lower abdomen, until he died.
