Prostitute remanded for robbery

Accra (Greater Accra) 28 July 2000

An Accra Circuit Tribunal on Thursday remanded Diana Ntriwaah, a prostitute, in prison custody for allegedly robbing an Italian of his personal belongings and 3.5 million cedis cash. Ntriwaah, 24, charged with conspiracy to commit crime and robbery, pleaded not guilty and will appear again on August 4.

Prosecuting, Inspector James Adu told the tribunal, chaired by Mrs. Elizabeth Anderson-Yeboah, that the complainant, Mr. Roberto Oritio, works in the country and resides at Tabora.

The accused is a hairdresser with no permanent place of abode. Inspector Adu said on June 14, this year, Mr. Oritio met Ntriwaah at Kwame Nkrumah Circle where the accused operates as a prostitute and invited her to his house to spend the night.

Three days later, the accused person came back and reported that she had contracted a strange disease after having an affair with him. The complainant gave the accused person 50,000 cedis for treatment.

Inspector Adu said the accused person, who was not satisfied with the money given her, went to the complainant again with two men and succeeded in collecting 400,000 cedis.

He said on July 9, thieves broke into Mr. Oritio's house when he and his watchman were away and stole personal belongings and some money.

Inspector Adu said on July 13, seven armed robbers attacked Mr. Oritio and his watchman, fired warning shots and took away a Sony Hifi sound system, mobile phones, 50 compact discs and 3.5million cedis.

According to the prosecutor, Mr. Oritio identified one of the robbers as one of the two men who accompanied Ntriwaah to his house to collect money.
