Yaw Asantewaa war re-staged

Kumasi (Ashanti Region) 24 July 2000

The Yaa Asantewaa War, fought between Ashantis and the British Colonialists in 1900, was re-staged in Kumasi, on Friday as part of the centenary celebration of the event.

As the cadet corps of Yaa Asantewaa Secondary School re-enacted scenes of the war in 30 minutes, most of the spectators shed tears. The celebration is under the theme, "Celebrating the heroism of the Africa woman".

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Samuel Nuamah-Donkor, Ashanti Regional Minister, noted that in the absence of war, citizens are to fight against injustice, bribery, corruption, ethnicity and other vices that impede development.

He, therefore, urged Ghanaians to support government's programmes aimed at eradicating negative tendencies, which undermine progress.

Mr. Nuamah-Donkor asked the people to ensure the education of their children to enable them to grow up to become useful citizens.

Major-General Henry Anyidoho, General Officer Commanding the Northern Command of the Ghana Army, called on Ghanaians to regard their culture as source of unity. He said this would ensure peace, stability and the total development of the nation.

Major-General Anyidoho called on women to take inspiration from Yaa Asantewaa and assist their male counterparts in decision-making.

Baffour Awuah V, Bantamahene, who represented Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, commended the cadet for their performance, which he described as splendid.
