Wa Police uncover pension fraud

Wa (Upper West) 18 July 2000

The Wa Police have uncovered a suspected pension fraud syndicate operating at the Upper West Regional office of the Controller and Accountant General's Department (CAGD).

Disclosing this to the Ghana News Agency at Wa on Tuesday, the Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Inspector Daniel Dorkpoh said the syndicate allegedly uses the names of 'ghost' pensioners to collect pay from the banks.

The syndicate however ran out of luck on July 4 this year when officials of the local branch of the Ghana Commercial Bank detected the suspicious behaviour of a man at the counter and alerted the Police who arrested him.

The suspect, Mark Zongnaa is alleged to have gone to the bank with a pensioner's identify card bearing the name of Joseph Salifu,a retired employee of the Department of Social Welfare. The card however had the embossed picture of Zongnaa.

He is said to have further told the police that he was not a pensioner but a farmer. He mentioned Pascal Tiirow and Gambo Mumuni both employees of the regional office of the CAGD as those who prepared the identity card for him.

Inspector Dorkpoh said Tiirow and Mumuni are on the run and police have mounted a search for them while further investigations continue to determine the extent of the fraud.

Nkrumaist Brigade supports Asamoah

Kumasi (Ashanti Region) 18 July 2000

The Ashanti Region branch of the Nkrumaist Brigade of the NDC has called on the leadership of the party to formally give Dr Obed Asamoah the nod as running mate to Professor John Evans Atta-Mills,in the presidential election.

It said the leadership should not yield to pressure from "insignificant and unknown groups" who are opposed to the choice of the attorney general.

The Brigade made the call at a press conference   Kumasi on Sunday to reaffirm its support for Dr. Asamoah

Alhaji Mohammed Ali Alfa, Ashanti Regional Co-ordinator of the Brigade, condemned the recent demonstrations in Accra by the Co-ordinating Committees of Co-Zongo, against press publications about the selection of Dr. Asamoah as Pro Mills' running mate.

He described that action as not only ill motivated but tribalistic calculated to destabilise the NDC and hijack the decision- making role of the party's national hierarchy.

Alhaji Alfa stated that Dr. Asamoah being a founding member of the NDC could use his experience to support Professor Atta-Mills in sustaining the country's peaceful and stable political atmosphere.

This apart, the Brigade said Dr. Asamoah is a diplomat who is well- respected in international  circles.

He also enjoys the support of the majority of the party members and virtually all affiliated groups of the NDC.

"With Dr. Asamoah therefore as running mate, all hurdles would be cleared to pave the way for a landslide victory for the Progressive Alliance in the 2000 general elections".
