Man before court for assaulting teacher

Tuobodom (Brong Ahafo) 10 July 2000

Kwami Williams, a 26-year-old unemployed man, who appeared before the Tuobodom community tribunal for allegedly assaulting and threatening a teacher of the Roman Catholic Junior Secondary School in the town for punishing his ward, has been remanded in police custody.

Williams pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge of threat of death with words intended to put fear in Mr Stephen K. Manu. He will re-appear on July 14.

The facts of the case are that on June 28, three children - Master David Darko, Master Francis Lekawa and Master Collins Derkyi - misconducted themselves while Mr Manu was teaching.

The teacher was said to have given the three children four lashes each. At the close of school, the teacher left for his farm but while there, a Good Samaritan came to warn him not to return home because Lekawa's parents, Williams and his wife, Afia Nwinugma, now at large, and some other family members were after his blood for punishing their son.

The prosecution said the teacher left his farm at about 4.30 p.m. and, on reaching home, the accused and his wife confronted and attacked him.

While the accused held Mr Manu check, the wife repeatedly slapped him until he was rescued by some passers-by.

The police later arrested the accused but Nwinugma absconded.  Meanwhile, a bench warrant has been issued for her arrest.
