Nana Akuoko Sarpong, Chairman of the National Commission on Culture (NCC), has called for the regular exhibition of the works of the country's artists to bring them to the limelight.

Opening the three-day first national exhibition of the unknown artists for the northern sector in Kumasi, he said the concept of the "unknown artists" was a novelty whose objective was to empower creative people across the country economically.

It is also aimed at bringing these artistic manifestation and recognition and their creators into the limelight in Ghana and the international arena.

The exhibition covers Ashanti, Brong-Ahafo, Northern, Upper East and Upper West regions. Things being exhibited include paintings, carvings, batik, tie and dye, leather works, ceramics and beads.

Nana Akuoko Sarpong said the exhibition, themed "Eyes through the third millennium threshold", suggests a creative vision and purports a thrust through the gate of a new environment, a new works with a new focus.

He said it is also targeted at enhancing the country's efforts at establishing national art galleries across the country adding that it is good for the artists, Ghana and the world since art galleries contribute to knowledge and development.

Mr Yao Dzamefe, Director of National Art Galleries, said the programme to hold the exhibitions was developed by the artists themselves to bring out their potential for recognition.

These artists, he said, must, therefore, be recognised for their economic potential pointing out that though they are rich, yet they are poor because the public has not recognised their potential.
