Soccer-Cabinet to have final word on Dossena's contract

Ho (Volta Region) 03 July 2000

Mr. Enoch Teye Mensah, Minister of Youth and Sports has said that cabinet is still assessing Black Stars’ coach, Giusseppe Dossena, and will make a final decision on whether or not to renew his two-year contract this month.

He said media report that the Ministry of Youth and Sports is in the process of dispensing of the services of the coach because of financial constraints should be considered as a misinformation and lies.

Speaking at the fourth anniversary of the Volta Region Mass Sports Association at Ho on Saturday, Mr. Mensah emphasised that coach Dossena was not appointed by the Sports Ministry but by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) with approval from cabinet.

"He was appointed by the cabinet after a GFA selected panel including representatives of the Sports Writers Association who picked Mr. Dossena among 19 applicants from all over the world".

The Minister said the coach was given the responsibility to ensure the qualification of the Black Stars to the World Cup, the Sydney Olympic and All African Cup Games but has been able to win only the under 20 African Cup for the nation.

"At the end of his contract he would have to be assessed based on the contract terms and cabinet's own assessment", he stated.

Mr. Mensah explained that it is the Ministry of Finance which pays the coach and not his Ministry of Youth and Sports, adding "nobody has said there is no money, all is dirty propaganda on the part of the coach", he declared.

Mr. Mensah said he considered current discussions on Dossena as pre-mature, unnecessary and an attempt by some people to throw dust into the eyes of the public.
