The arrest was effected by the

A government of the United Ghana
Movement (UGM) will ensure equal access to education and de-emphasise the
educational curriculum that is currently inclined towards Christian tenets.
"It will also ensure that
Muslims, who make up more than 30 per cent of the population, gain access to
formal education to reflect the equality of every Ghanaian as the attainment of
republican status signifies", Dr. Charles Wereko-Brobby, UGM founder and
presidential candidate, said.
Addressing a Republic Day rally in
Accra on Saturday under the theme "Promotion of Education of Muslims in
the Community", he noted that formal education holds the key to prosperity
and development and anyone who lacks it risks being exploited by the rich and
influential.
He said British colonialists,
being Christian, left an educational system "that is skewed in a way that
it promotes Christianity", adding that the constitution grants every
Ghanaian the right to belong to any religion and not to have any forced on
them.
Dr. Wereko-Brobby said the
introduction of the Free Compulsory Universal Basic Education (FCUBE) in Ghana
places Muslims at a disadvantage since the educational system does not
facilitate their ability to take advantage of the programme.
The UGM, he said, would provide
the people of Nima and similar slums with good drainage systems and do away
with the need to clean drains periodically.
Nii Armah Tagoe, National
Chairman, advised members not to let their contribution to the UGM be in vain
by allowing people to deceive them about their conviction.
He said Ghanaians have been
suffering for more than 20 years under NDC rule and that four more years for
the NDC would do nothing to change their plight.

The Secretary-General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Mr Christian Appiah Agyei says he will not seek re-election at the end of his second four-year term, which ends in September.
A statement by the TUC in Accra on Monday said Mr Appiah Agyei said his decision is voluntary and that he is making way for other people to serve the labour movement.
Disclosing this at a regular Executive Board meeting of the labour movement at Koforidua at the weekend, Mr Appiah Agyei said he would, however, continue to serve on international organisations on which his terms of office are yet to expire.
A new Secretary-General would be elected at the Sixth Quadrennial Delegates Congress scheduled at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi between September 16 and 16.
Under the TUC's constitution, he could seek re-election. Mr Appiah Agyei, who started working with the TUC in 1960, thanked members of the congress, particularly the Executive Board, for their co-operation and understanding during his term of office.
Mr Alex Bonney, Chairman of the TUC, thanked Mr Appiah Agyei for his maturity in handling the affairs of the congress and said he would be given a fitting honour at the appropriate time.

Wa (Upper West) 03 July 2000
The Upper West Regional branch of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has asked the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) to stop further deductions from salaries of their members otherwise "there will be trouble."
They have also asked GNAT to refund all such illegal deductions with interest at current bank rates.
These were contained in a six-point statement signed by Mr Callistus B. Baniyeni, regional secretary of NAGRAT and copied to the Director-General of Ghana Education Service (GES), regional and district directors of the GES and the press among others.
The statement referred to an earlier warning served on GNAT on May 24 this year to stop the deductions but which it has ignored with "arrogant impunity".
"You should not underrate our determined resolution to go to any length, not excluding bringing hell down on GNAT to right what is obviously wrong and to educate you on the proper ways of recruiting members," the statement added.
The statement added: " we shall resort to other options to stop you from the unlawful deductions forthwith".
The NAGRAT, formerly a member of GNAT broke away to form a separate association.

Ashaiman (Greater Accra) 03 July 2000
The Ashaiman Muslim Chiefs Association has called on the hierarchy of the NDC to hold primaries to elect a parliamentary candidate for Ashaiman constituency to contest the December 2000 elections.
According to the Chiefs this would help calm the political tension mounting within supporters of the NDC following rumours that there would be no primaries in the Ashaiman constituency this year.
The decision was announced by Alhaji Adam Soale, Chief Gonja and Chairman of the Association at a meeting attended by 18 Muslim Chiefs and eight of the deputies near the at the weekend to discuss the political situation in the township.
Executives of the Ashaiman branch of the Veranda Boys and Girls Association also attended the meeting and pledged their support for the chiefs.
They are the heads of the Wangara, Zabrama, Hausa, Yadiga, Kusasi, Busanga, Grushie, Isamire, Gonja, Kusuntu, Sisala, Buzu, Chamba, Frafra, Balibali, Fulani, Kotokoli and Balugu communities in Ashaiman.
Alhaji Soale said Mr Franklin Aheto the sitting MP for the Ashaiman and Mr Alfred Agbesi, have both approached the association to seek its support to contest the elections on the ticket of the NDC.
He denied rumours that they have agreed to throw their weight behind a particular candidate. "As Chiefs, we are not allowed by the constitution to engage in partisan politics.” Alhaji Soale however advised the NDC to ensure free and fair primaries.

Mahama promises

Wa (Upper West) 03 July 2000
Dr Edward Mahama, flagbearer of
the people's National Convention (PNC) on Sunday promised Ghanaians
"economic prosperity " if he and his party win power in the December
general elections.
He said unlike the ruling National
Democratic Congress (NDC), which promises Ghanaians prosperity at a future date
under its vision 2020 programme, a government of the PNC will make Ghanaians
prosperous promptly by quickly tackling the causes of the hardships facing the
people.
Dr Mahama who is on a five-day
campaign tour of the Upper West region to solicit for votes, was addressing a
political rally organised by the PNC at Wa.
The PNC flagbearer blamed the
hardships in the country to incompetence and mismanagement by the government
promising that his party would provide a peaceful dynamic and visionary
leadership.
Dr Mahama called on Ghanaians to
translate their desire for change into overwhelming vote against the NDC by
voting massively for the PNC in the elections.
The Rev. Nii Noi, deputy national
organiser of the party, said a government of the PNC would reintroduce
subsidies on agricultural inputs for farmers as it has become evidently clear
that majority of Ghanaian farmers cannot afford the high costs of fertilisers
and insecticides.

Sunyani (Greater Accra) 03 July 2000
A remembrance church service was held at the Saint Amsel Anglican Church in Sunyani on Sunday in memory of the three high court judges and one retired Army officer who were murdered in Accra 18 years ago.
The victims were Justice (Mrs) Cecilia Koranteng-Addo, Justice Kwadwo Agyei Agyapong, Justice Fred Poku Sarkodee and Major Sam Acquah (rtd).
In attendance were some of the members of the Brong-Ahafo Regional Branch of the Ghana Bar Association, led by Mr Yaw Owiredu Peprah its president.
In a sermon, Bishop Thomas Ampah Brient recounted the heinous murder of the four persons and asked Christians to pray so that such incidents would never occur again in the country.
It was rather unfortunate that such bararous killings should happen in the country, he said but urged the family of the victims to forgive and forget and called for unity among the populace so that peace could prevail in the country.
