Soccer-Hearts whip Afienya 3-0 in ABC/FA Cup

Accra: Accra Hearts of Oak reached the quarterfinals of the ABC/FA Cup when they whipped Afienya United 3-0 in their one-eighth round match played at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday.

Kenneth Sarpong, Joe Fameyeh and Charles Allotey scored a goal each for Hearts in the 37th, 45th and 48th minutes.

Hearts took control over the game right after Afienya had kicked off and dominated for the first 20 minutes but they could not transform their superiority into goals.

In the 32nd minute, Hearts' Ishmael Addo should have put his side ahead after he had outwitted his marker but he shot wide from close range with only goalkeeper David Sharpe of Afienya to beat.

Five minutes later, Sarpong broke the deadlock when he tapped the ball into the net when goalkeeper Sharpe failed to make a first-time grab of Addo's shot.

Hearts continued their dominance and scored the second goal on the stroke of half-time through Fameyeh when he finished off beautifully, a two-man move between Sarpong and Emmanuel Yartey.

Back from recess, the Phobians did not allow the Afienya lads any respite as Allotey banged in the third goal in the 48th minute from Sarpong's pass.

Afienya earned a penalty in the 61st minute when Emmanuel Aidoo was brought down by Hearts goalkeeper, James Nanor in the box but Afienya's Ablade Morgan, who elected himself to effect the kick, blasted it over the bar.

From then on, complacency took the better part of the Phobians as they played a relaxed game allowing Afienya to come into the picture.

Afienya nearly pulled one back in the 65th minute when Dada Dotse's powerful shot beat goalkeeper Nanor but the ball was stopped on the goal-line by Hearts' Amankwa Mireku.

For the rest of the period, Afienya pinned the Phobians to their own half as they fought desperately for a consolation goal but to no avail.

King Faisal shock Kotoko

Kumasi: King Faisal beat defending champions Kumasi Asante Kotoko 2-1 in their match played at the Kumasi Sports Stadium, rendered soggy by a downpour.

Kotoko scored first through outside right George Siaw, whose shot from a free-kick in the seventh minute in the area of Faisal, slipped through the hands of goalkeeper Sampson Appiah.

Faisal had to wait till the 44th minute when inside left Nana Kofi Frimpong cancelled Kotoko's lead with a header in a goal-mouth action.

Faisal resumed the game after the break with greater determination and shot

into the lead through Nana Frimpong, who beat defender Kalilu Dramani and fired past goalkeeper Constance Mantey into the roof of the net in the 52nd minute for the match winner.

Nkawkaw: Okwawu United secured a quater-final berth when they eliminated Sekondi Hasaacas 4-3 on penalties in their match played at the Nkawkaw Park.

George Ainoo and Kofi Abbrey's kicks were saved by Joseph Aryeetey.
