Soccer-It is a collective decision - SWAG

Accra, (Greater Accra) 21 July '99,

The Sports Writers association of Ghana (SWAG) said on Tuesday that its call for the rejection of the Tagoe Report, in respect of the renovation works of the Accra and Kumasi stadiums, was a collective decision and not the personal view of any member.

In a statement issued in Accra and signed by its secretary, Mr Emmanuel Amoako, the SWAG said after a thorough study of the report, it decided to hold a press conference to declare its stand on the matter but knowing that the 24th Awards Night of SWAG was near, it decided to use that platform to state its position.

The association explained that speeches delivered by the SWAG President at such functions are thoroughly discussed and approved by the entire executive and that what was put across on Saturday, July 10 this year was no exception.

"It is, therefore, utterly wrong for anybody to assume that whatever was contained in the President's speech was his personal opinion", it said.

The SWAG is happy to note that it is not alone in the condemnation of the Tagoe report, adding that public outcry of the report has been unanimous ever since it was released.

"We are, therefore, surprised that instead of addressing the concern raised by many knowledgeable people on the subject, a personal vendetta has been mounted against the President of SWAG.

This old-fashioned propaganda tool is nothing new to Ghanaians and we trust all well-meaning citizens will be able to discern the truth from falsehood, SWAG added.

Soccer- "I did not sponsor Black Queens"-Maxbees

Accra, (Greater Accra) 21 July '99,

Mr Maxwell Sarfo (Maxbees), chairman of Maxbees football club, a second division club in Suhum, on Tuesday denied media reports that he sponsored the national Women's soccer team, Black Queens, to the United States for the Women's World Cup.

Speaking at a press briefing in Accra, Maxbees said what he and other two colleagues Richard Atto Okine and Augustus Odoom (all businessmen based in the U.S.) did was to host the Queens and made them feel at home.

He said, he was surprised when he heard later that his name was advertised on an Accra Television station that he together with the friends single-handedly sponsored the Queens thereby discrediting the government.

Maxbees apologised to the government, the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Ghana Football Association of the damage the report might have caused them.
