Fake Police Officer extorts 120,000 cedis for recruitment

Accra (Greater Accra) 8th July '99

A circuit tribunal in Accra on Wednesday convicted a carpenter, who posed as a Police Officer and extorted 120,000 cedis from two persons to recruit them into the Police Service.

Konde Naibe, 30, pleaded guilty to a charge of impersonation.

The tribunal, chaired by Mr Charles Nyewolema, deferred sentence until July 15 at the instance of the prosecution to further investigate the matter and prefer additional charges against the accused.

Police Inspector E. K. Dunyo told the tribunal that in May, Naibe went to Kwashie Kumah, near Amasaman in the Ga District, and introduced himself to two young men as a Senior Police Officer.

The accused told them that he could help them to be recruited into the Police Service and extorted 120,000 cedis from them after showing them fake documents.

The prosecution said Naibe asked the two men to accompany him to the Police Headquarters, where he could introduce them to some of his senior colleagues who could help them in the recruitment.

When they got there, the complainants found his attitude suspicious so they reported him to a Police officer. When he was arrested and searched, a fake police identity card and a rubber stamp were found on him.

Police also found on him 99,000 cedis in 2,000 denominations, nine of which bore the same serial number.
