Abesim gets new chief at last

Abesim (Brong Ahafo) 03 January 2003 - The people of Abesim, near Sunyani, on Thursday went into the streets in wild jubilation to celebrate the nomination of Kwabena Adomah, a teacher, by the Omanhene of the Dormaa Traditional Area, Osagyefo Oseadeyo Agyeman Badu 11, as the chief of the town.

The town has not had a chief since the late Nana Ansu Gyeabour died four years ago, as a result of a dispute among three contestants of the royal family. Although the Queenmother of the town, Nana Yaa Pomaa, nominated Kwabena Obiri, a businessman, as her candidate, his installation could not take place as the other factions rejected him.

An elder of the town who spoke to the Ghana News Agency on anonymity stated that Adomah was nominated because his side of the royal family had not occupied the stool for a long time. Last year, confusion engulfed the town when attempts were made to install the Queenmother's candidate, as supporters of Adomah also carried him shoulder high to signify his installation.

Police had to intervene with tear gas to stop the enstoolment and restore order but the stool remained vacant till the new chief's nomination by the Dormaa Omanhene.
