Stadium nurses want review of 4,000 cedis allowance

Accra (Greater Accra) 18 January 2002 - Three nurses assigned to the Accra Sports Stadium during the Mines Stars-Yeji Stars Middle League match on Wednesday have expressed their disappointment over the meagre allowances paid to nurses during matches. Each nurse is entitled to 4,000 cedis on a match-day.

The nurses who spoke on behalf of their colleagues but pleaded anonymous showed the GNA the 4,000 cedis each given them and expressed regret for accepting to work at the stadium.

They claimed the allowances are not even enough to meet their transportation expenses from their homes to the stadium and back let alone buying any kind of refreshment after a match.

Looking dejected and worried, the nurses admitted that even though the allowances vary according to the magnitude of every match, the highest allowances ever paid them was 30,000 cedis which they received on the "black Wednesday," May nine, during the Hearts - Kotoko epic league encounter.

They therefore appealed to the National Sports Council and the Ghana Football Association to give them appreciable allowances to cater for their transportation and other expenses as a way of inducing them to give of their best.

The nurses said increasing their allowances is one of the ways of ensuring their punctuality and efficiency at the stadium.

Former Meteors skipper on the run!

Accra (Greater Accra) 18 January 2002 - Harry Quainoo, a former student of the Cape Coast Polytechnics at the centre of an assault allegation against former Black Meteors captain Ablade Kumah, on Wednesday lampooned the Tema Community Two police for intentionally freeing Kumah to enable him run out of the country.

Ablade Kumah, also a former captain of club side, Hearts of Oak, is said to have left the country in the heat of the saga on Tuesday for Bulgaria to ply his football trade.

Speaking to the GNA Sports in Tema on Wednesday, Quainoo said he had suspected something fishy from the very day the player and his hired "machomen" were bailed soon after their assault on him.

He said he had incurred some expenses following the assault on him by the hired "machomen" and his admission at the Tema General Hospital and thought the police would settle the issue before the player is allowed to leave the country.

But contrary to Quainoo's assertion, the Tema Community Two police told the GNA Sports on Tuesday that investigations were almost completed for the matter to be sent to the court.

Assistant Superintendent of police Kwabena Antwi-Boasiako said if it was found out that Ablade had left the country, his girlfriend Hanna Harrison, the machomen together with those who bailed the player would be put before court.

Ablade Kumah, who last played for the Black Stars at the 1996 African Cup of

Nations in South Africa allegedly, hired machomen to beat up Quainoo, apparently to teach him some "lessons" for dating his girlfriend.

A police source said students of the International School of Aviation, in Tema Community 3 on Sunday dawn lodged a complaint at the station against the former international star.   Subsequently, the police arrested Ablade and his friends but they were released later to allow investigation to commence.

Raymond Narh sets a date with Smith Odoom

Accra (Greater Accra) 18 January 2002 - Ghana's Commonwealth gold medallist, Raymond Narh, on Thursday signed a 10 million cedis contract to challenge Smith Odoom to his National, West Africa and African Super featherweight title.

Under the terms of an agreement pertaining to the fight, the winner of the 12 round title fight pockets the entire 10 million cedis purse at stake. Each camp is expected to put in a five-million cedi bet.

The encounter, which is under Prince and Baseline Promotion Syndicate is dubbed "Put-Up or Shut-Up" and is scheduled for 22nd February at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Speaking to GNA Sports before the signing of the agreement, Raymond Narh debunked the assertion by people that he is not ripe for the fight saying the time is ripe for him to prove to Odoom that he is capable of beating him.

"Odoom has been running away from me for a very long time and now is the time for me to be crowned as the featherweight champion" Narh stated. He said all his words are going to be put into action on the day of the fight and challenged Odoom to either "Put-Up or Shut-Up".

Smith Odoom did not turn for the signing on ceremony but was represented by his coach. Mr Alfred Martey of the Prince and Baseline promotion outlined some other bouts lined up for the night. These include a 12 round title fight for a West African Championship between Joseph Sarkordie and Ben Neequaye while Prince Mama takes on Braimah "Bukom Banku" Kamoko in the National and super Middle weight championship.

Osuman Akaba would also take on Ayitey Mettle in an eight round contest but the opponent of Anyetei Laryea the National and west African bantamweight Champion is yet to be named.

Mr Martey  in an answer to a question told the GNA Sports  that  even though the recent championship they staged was a financial loss, their desire to promote professional boxing to greater heights has compelled them to come out with this show.
