Ghana slumps against Liberia in Accra

Accra (Greater Accra) 29 January 2001

The Black Stars of Ghana slumped 1 - 3 at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday when they hosted the Lone Star of Liberia in a 2002 World Cup qualifier.

The Ghanaians kicked-off and dictated the early exchanges but soon lost the initiative to the Liberians who nearly got the opener in the eighth minute when George Weah struck a low shot past goalkeeper Richard Kingston, but Jacob Nettey responded with a clearance on the line.

A floated free-kick in the 10th minute however saw Frank Seator nodding home for an earlier lead by Liberia.

In the 17th minute, Kingston had to rush out to deny James Debbah who was set up with a long through pass from Weah.

The best chance to the Black Stars in the half fell to Charles Amoah who connected Emmanuel Duah's pass with a glancing header to the far right with the goalkeeper completely beaten but it missed target narrowly.

On the stroke of half time, Weah sent a telegraph to Seator in the defensive third of the Ghanaians but Seator's non-drop shot missed narrowly, leaving the Liberians on top with only a goal.

Early in the second half the Black Stars raised their game and subjected the Liberians to persistent attacks but their final balls often resulted in near misses.

Emmanuel Duah missed a grounder in the 46th minute and Amoah header a neat pull out from Otto Addo over the bar in the 55th minute.

A minute later, Yaw Preko replaced Otto on the right flank as the Black Stars pressed forward looking for the leveller. Emmanuel Osei Kuffuor came in for Charles Amoah in the 63rd minute and this paid dividends as he initiated a move on the left flank and passed to Akunnor, who centred for Duah to scramble home for the equaliser.

The Black Stars attack soon took a nap and allowed the Liberians to hem them in their own half and the pressure forced the Ghanaians to concede a penalty in the 85th minute through Sam Johnson's tangled Weah for Oliver Makor to make it two for Liberia.

Two minutes to time, Musa Shanon made it three for Liberia after James Debbah flashed past Sam Johnson teased out goalkeeper Kingston in Ghana's post to lay him a telepathic pass to connect home.

Boxing-Gideon Annor gets verdict over Alfred Kotey

Accra (Greater Accra) 27 January 2001

Gideon Annor, retained his West African and National super featherweight title with a controversial verdict over former WBO bantamweight champion, Alfred Kotey at the Kaneshie Sports Complex on Saturday.

Though the fight was very close and sometimes appeared to be going in favour of the challenger Judges J. B. Osabutey and Ataa Abe Adamah scored it 117 - 114 and 118 - 111 respectively in favour of Annor while the third judge, Confidence Hiagbe scored both boxers at par at 116.

Mr Eddie Blay, a former world title contender and one time chairman of the Ghana Amateur Boxing Association (BABA) described the verdict as "unfair to professional boxing".

When referee Godfred Cobblah signalled the two boxers to begin hostilities it was Kotey who dictated the pace, chasing Annor round the ring and jabbing effectively while the champion countered with jabs which did not penetrate the guard of the challenger.

From the second round however, Annor appeared to have found his rhythm as he connected perfectly to the head of Kotey who concentrated his assault on the mid section of the champion.

The two boxers exhibited superb ring craft, which had all the ingredients of a title fight as they jabbed, ducked, bobbed and wove to the admiration of the large crowd who cheered ceaselessly.

The classic fight continued until the sixth round when both boxers began to show signs of tiredness, thereby reducing the tempo of the fight considerably.

Even then, it was very close with each boxer fighting back any time the other seemed to dictate the pace.

By the ninth round the two boxers seemed rejuvenated and fought fiercely, but it was Kotey who was more aggressive as he thundered Annor with hefty left and right combinations in the dying minutes, stunning the champion before the bell.

From the tenth round the pattern of mobility changed as Annor started pursuing Kotey whose punch count had reduced drastically.

Alfred however kept his guard high and countered in his backward march.

The two boxers stood toe-to-toe in the 11th and 12th rounds and bombed each other with short shots and swift combinations without any of them establishing any clear supremacy.

And when the bell sounded for the end of the fight there was a thunderous applause from the spectators, as a testimony of appreciation for the superlative performance of the two pugilists.

The promoter of the fight Mr Osei Kwame Despite announced there would be a rematch in Kumasi to clear the controversy surrounding the verdict.

He also decided to double the purses of the two boxers for their excellent performance.

In other fights of the "Akutruku Night" Zakaria Salifu gained a unanimous decision over Roland Mills in a six round lightweight contest while Osumanu Akaba won a third round TKO decision over Togolese combatant, Sarouna Mamoudou.

Sam Danso stopped Arday Dauda in the third round when they met in a super-featherweight duel and Anyetei Laryea silenced Adamu Mohammed in the third round

when Adamu's corner threw in the towel.

Welterweights, Ayitey Powers and Ashiaquaye Aryee shared the honours after eight rounds of ring hostilities while James "Sydney" Toney raised his professional record to 2 - 0 - 0 with two knockouts when he stopped Camerounian, M'boum Moulawo in the second round.

The tournament was watched by, big wigs from the sporting fraternity including the Mallam Ali Yussif Issah, Minister of Sports designate and Brigadier George Brock, Chairman of the National Sports Council (NSC).
