Cricket-South Africa 100-3 against Sri Lanka

Johannesburg (South Africa) 18 January 2001

Nicky Boje and Neil McKenzie appeared to be steering South Africa to victory midway

through their run chase in the sixth and final one-day international against Sri Lanka at the Wanderers on Wednesday.

After 21 overs South Africa, bidding to equal the West Indies' world record of 11 consecutive victories in one-day internationals, were 100 for three with Boje unbeaten on 31 and McKenzie 16 not out.

The pair had shared an unbroken partnership of 65 for the fourth wicket.

The match was reduced to 42 overs per side after a thunderstorm earlier in the day. With the tourists having lost three wickets when the rain came, the South African target was

revised down to 209 using the Duckworth-Lewis method.

Russel Arnold top scored with 65 not out in Sri Lanka's total of 214 for six.

South Africa lead the series 5-0.

Ibrahim Tanko transfers to Freiburg, suspension from DFB likely

Freiburg (Germany) 18 January 2001

Ghanaian native Ibrahim Tanko transferred from Borussia Dortmund to German Bundesliga rivals SC Freiburg on Wednesday, but it remains unknown when the striker will play for his new side.

The 23-year-old Tanko tested positive for marijuana use after Dortmund's German Cup match November 29 against Schalke 04, prompting Dortmund to suspend him.

Tanko was scheduled to join Freiburg this summer, but Dortmund allowed him to leave early.

Tanko faces a likely suspension from the German Football Federation, whose sports court last year banned Borussia Moenchengladbach's Quido Lanzaat for three months after he tested positive for cannabis consumption.

Soccer-Radebe caught in new club v country row

London (United Kingdom) 18 January 2001

Leeds United and the South African Football Association (SAFA) are set to clash over

captain Lucas Radebe's availability for international matches.

South Africa have a World Cup qualifier against Burkina Faso on January 27, the same day Leeds face Liverpool in a fourth round English FA Cup tie.

Leeds manager David O'Leary is reluctant to release the central defender, the official Leeds website said on Tuesday.

"The question people should ask the likes of Lucas is where their bread and butter come from?" O'Leary said.

"Any club that does well builds their success in domestic competitions. It brings in money to allow clubs to pay these big wages.

So should players be allowed to take off when it suits them?" the Irishman added.

SAFA are hoping a new deal over appearance fees and bonuses will encourage Radebe, who has missed all but one of his country's last 15 games through injury or club commitments, to play more internationals.

"I cannot say much at this stage until I have discussed the issue with the team captain Lucas Radebe," SAFA chief executive Danny Jordaan told the Johannesburg Star newspaper.

"Under discussion will be the appearance fee and other incentives. Hopefully we can finalise the new deal for the players before our World Cup qualifier against Burkina Faso in Rustenburg next Saturday," he added.

Soccer-Injured Amunike sidelined for at least six months

Albacete (Spain) 18 January 2001

Nigerian international midfielder Emmanuel Amunike needs surgery for a ruptured

Achilles tendon that will put him out action for at least six months, doctors at his Spanish second division club Albacete said on Tuesday.

Amunike received the injury during Saturday's African Nations' Cup qualifier against Zambia in Lagos.

The former Barcelona player joined Albacete this season after being sidelined for more than two years following a serious knee injury, which led to the termination of his contract at the Catalan club.

"It was bad luck yet again, but I have to keep my chin up and continue working. I cannot do anything else," he said.

Soccer-Nigeria mourns dead fan, moves World Cup tie from Lagos

Lagos (Nigeria) 18 January 2001

Nigerian soccer officials are mourning the death of an unidentified soccer fan who was killed by police shortly before the country's African Nations cup qualifier against Zambia Saturday.

The death and the invasion of the pitch by fans after the match, has re-opened discussions about security at the nation's premier sports venue, the National Stadium, during big matches.

It has also forced the Nigeria Football Association (NFA) to shift the 27 January World Cup qualifier between Nigeria and Sudan to the south-eastern city of Port Harcourt.

In what was a weekend of mixed blessings for Nigeria, the Super Eagles defeated the Chipolopolo by a lone goal to achieve a comfortable lead in its group, but suffered the loss of a fan, killed by a trigger-happy policeman drafted to provide security.

NFA Spokesman, Austin Mgbolu, said the association had already sent a condolence message to the family of the deceased and promised that the soccer body would investigate the death.

In a statement, Mgbolu said there were indications that the offending policeman had been arrested as the police continued investigations into the shooting.

The spokesman said security men at the match venue should have been equipped with rubber bullets to protect the lives of fans.

To ensure security on Saturday, several armed and mounted policemen were deployed to the national stadium by Nigerian Breweries which sponsored the encounter.

Golf-South Africa's Ernie Els named Golfer of The Year

Cape Town (South Africa) 18 January 2001

South Africa's golfing wonder boy Ernie Els, who last month wrestled the Nedbank

Challenge Two million dollars prize from Lee Westwood in a sudden-death playoff, has been named Golfer of the Year by Compleat Golfer magazine.

The recognition for Els's outstanding performance in 2000 - his victory at Sun City, the Loch Lomond Invitational and The International and as runner-up in the US Masters, the US Open and the Open Championship-made him the clear winner of the award, which was presented at a black-tie dinner in Johannesburg on Monday night.

Els, who is ranked number two in the world behind Tiger Woods, has won two major championships.

Gauteng golf administrator Jimmy Metcalfe's contribution to the sport earned him the Compleat Golfer Contribution to the Golf Industry Award at the same function.

Metcalfe has been involved in golf for 36 years and has held key roles in the Transvaal Golf Union, the SA Golf Union and the Associated Clubs of South Africa.

He is currently president of the Golf Clubs Association of South Africa and was appointed to the Board of the Southern Africa Tour in 1998.

Compleat Golfer's annual awards dinner is the platform for the major golf associations in South Africa to recognise the golfing achievements of South Africa's professional and amateur players.

Royal Cape GC's Craig Ross was named Club Pro of the Year, Dean Lambert the Amateur Golfer of the Year, Thomas Aiken the Junior Golfer of the Year and Jean Hugo Rookie of the Year, with the Ladies Golfer of the Year Award going to Gilly Tebbutt.

Awards were also presented to South Africa's Top 10 courses as adjudged by a 50-strong panel of experts.

The Gary Player Country Club was voted the premier golf course, knocking Durban Country Club from the number one position it has held for the past six years.
