Arts Poster Competition on 'violence against women' launched.

Ho (Volta Region) 18 January 2001

Mrs Felicia Okyere-Darko, Principal State Attorney, on Wednesday called for concerted efforts in fighting violence against women and children in society.

This should include more education and sensitisation programmes to encourage women and children who fall victim to violence to report their assailants to the police.

Mrs Okyere-Darko was speaking at the launch of an Arts Poster Competition on the theme "Violence against Women" for 20 pupils from four junior secondary schools in Ho.

The participating schools are Dora Memorial, Prince of Peace, Kabore and Mawuli Junior Secondary Schools.

The competition was organised by Women in Law and Development in Africa (WiLDAF) in collaboration with Rhema-Tech Limited, a technical consulting firm in Ho.

Winning entries for which prizes will be awarded in March this year will be produced as posters, T' Shirts and other educational materials.

Mrs Okyere-Darko said using art forms to depict the crimes, cruelty and violence against women and the victims would not only create awareness among the children but would also serve as shock treatment.

She stressed that criminal cases must not be settled outside the court. It is also the civic responsibility of victims of violence and others around them to report crimes".

Captain George Nfodjo (Rtd), Ho District Chief Executive, urged the children to cultivate the virtues of forgiveness and patience the lack of which, he said, is the cause of the numerous acts of violence against humanity.
