AMA withdraws case against Ghana Telecom

Accra (Greater Accra) 11 January 2001

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) on Wednesday said it would no longer close down Ghana Telecom payphone booths in the metropolis for non-payment of property ownership permit.

Mr. Elliot Adom, Public Relations Officer of the AMA, who disclosed this to the GNA in an exclusive interview in Accra, said the decision to discontinue the closure was taken after a meeting between the management of the two bodies.

He said the matter has been resolved amicably.

The AMA last year embarked on the closure of phone booths belonging to the Ghana Telecom. However the then Minister of National Security, Mr. Totobi Quakyi, intervened to suspend the closure on the grounds that it would pose a security threat in the wake of efforts to solve the serial killing of women.

However, the AMA decided to close down the booths again after Ghana Telecom indicated its intention not to honour any obligation to the assembly.
