Reject NDC government in 2000 polls - MP
Nsuta (Ashanti Region) 8 Jan. 2000
The electorate have been asked to vote massively to reject the government of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in this year's general elections for its dismal economic performance that has led to mass suffering.
Mr Kwame Osei-Prempeh, Member of Parliament for Nsuta-Kwamang, said the widespread economic hardships have resulted in the inability of the people to pay for medical bills, enjoy decent living, pay for the fees of their wards in school and settle utility service charges among other obligations.
"This situation is a testimony of the NDC government's failure.
Mr Osei-Prempeh was addressing a rally organised by the Nsuta branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to raise funds to support the party's activities in the area.
He gave the assurance that an NPP government would turn the economy round and bring real economic development and prosperity to the people.
He said for this to happen, it is important for all party activists to avoid complacency and work hard to reach out to the people with the right message to assist them to make the right choice at the polls.
Mr Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu, MP for Old-Tafo-Suame, advised all members of the party to show a high sense of political maturity and discipline by refusing to be drawn into any "dirty politics" likely to engender confrontation.

Rent Officer interdicted for embezzling 4.6 million cedes
Accra (Greater Accra) 8 Jan. 2000
The Minister of Works and Housing, Mr Isaac Adjei-Mensah, on Friday ordered the immediate interdiction of a rent officer of the Rent Control Department, Accra, for embezzling 4.6 million cedis.
This followed an admission by Mr Christopher Bonako that he has embezzled the amount, which was collected on behalf of landlords in the course of settling rent cases.
A statement from the Ministry said last December, Mr Nathaniel Pappoe, a landlord deposited an amount of 2.4 million cedis with Mr Bonako to be given to Abraham Nartey, a tenant to enable him recover his premises from him.
"When the tenant came to collect his money, the rent officer issued him a dud cheque, which was dishonoured by the bank and all attempts to recover the money has failed."
The statement said Mr. Bonako again received 2.2 million cedis from another landlord and refused to pay it to a tenant on demand.
Mr. Adjei-Mensah warned officers of the rent control department nation-wide, who handle monies on behalf of government to be careful and refrain from such acts.
