Support new Minister-Baba

Accra (Greater Accra) 20 February 2001

Mr B.T. Baba, President of the Ghana Olympic Committee has called on sportsmen and women to support the new Minister for Youth and Sports, Mallam Yusif Isah, since the Minister has proved to be "sincere and genuinely interested in the promotion of sports."

"All of us must co-operate to come to his aide because sports has now assumed a passionate dimension in our country''.

Speaking to the GNA sports in Accra on Monday, Mr Baba said the Minister's talk about consultation shows he is prepared to listen and fight for resources to help with the accomplishment of sports policies.

He cautioned those who will offer consultative advise to the Minister to discuss issues and policies that will enhance his work and not seek favours and thereby take wrong decisions for him.

He expressed disgust about the derogatory remarks being made by a cross-section of the public about the Minister saying people take on jobs with little knowledge but learn very fast once they have the interest.

Touching on the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), Mr Baba said the GOC has acquired a 10-acre plot of land at Amasaman, near Accra, for the construction of a community Olympic sports stadium.

The project will have a football Park, athletic oval, sport hall and clinic among others.

Mr Baba, said the project is line with International Olympic Committee, IOU's policy of installing such projects in deprived communities.

He said Amasaman was chosen because it is a fast growing community with a lot of youngsters who could use the project to develop their sporting talents.

"With some of these structures in place, our athletes and boxers can get access to facilities which will help them win national and continental honours'' Mr Baba said the project which will start by end of this year would be completed within a period of four years.

He disclosed that work has already begun on a sports complex in Accra near the Ridge Church.

The complex will have tennis, handball, volleyball and basketball courts, a conference room and sports shop among others where sports equipment will be sold at affordable prices for sportsmen and women.

Mr Baba said the complex was purposefully cited near the stadium to make it easily accessible to those actively involved in sports.

He said an annual congress of the Committee scheduled for Accra on February 23

would discuss the projects.

The main focus, however, is the election of a new president and other executive positions.

Mr Baba is likely to be returned unopposed as president.

Other positions to be contested for are first and second vice-presidents and secretary among others.

The GOC as a body, gives financial and logistical supports to various associations and well as organising technical and leadership courses for coaches and officials.

Kotoko beat Goldfields in special football match

Kumasi (Ashanti Region) 20 February 20, 2001

Kumasi Asante Kotoko maintained their off-season impressive form beating Obuasi Goldfields 2-1 in a special football match played in honour of the Ashanti Regional Minister, Mr Sampson Kwaku Boafo at the Kumasi sports stadium on Sunday.

The teeming crowd which included the Minister of Youth and Sports, Mallam Yusif Issa, roared when Kotoko shot into the lead after a scoreless first half in which Goldfields dominated.

Speedster Abedi Sarfo outpaced the Goldfields defence after a brilliant dribbling session and hit the ball wide off goalkeeper Rashid Campaore in the 47th minute.

With the crowd rooting for Kotoko, their attackers of Lawrence Adjei, Augustine Amponsah, Gordon Ablordey, Stephen Oduro and Joe Okyere laid siege on the goal-area of the Obuasi club whose defence had to play it tough and hard to stop the menacing moves of Kotoko.

Goldfields trio of Yaw Owusu, Ofosu Amoah, Nana Arhin Duah and Dauda Seidu worked like a loom and looked like sweeping the tight Kotoko defence off its feet.

Kotoko brought in Frank Atsou and Shilla alhassan for Lawrence Kainyah and Joe Okyere in the 64th minute.

Shilla Alhassan announced his presence when he scored the second goal in the 67th minute after the Goldfields defence had been pressurised.

Kotoko after then had the ball to themselves as they run riot keeping the Obuasi club to its half of the field but could not increase the tally.

Substitute Camara Dini beat down the score to 2-1 in the 77th minute in a defensive mix-up.

Goldfields boosted by the goal went all out to score the equaliser but the Kotoko defence marshalled by Isaac "Ninja" Owusu stood out gallantly.
