SWAAG, GBL to institute "Club of the Month"

Accra (Greater Accra) 19 February 2001

The Sports Writers Association (SWAG) and Ghana Brewery Limited (GBL) would from next year's Premier League institute "Club of the month" award in addiction to its end-of-year awards.

Mr. Martin Esson-Benjamin, Managing Director of GBL, said the award is part of the company's desire to increase enthusiasm in the sport to help lift Ghana football to the status it was a few years back.

"Certainly, the lustre has fallen off the passion of the people in as far as our senior national team, Black Stars is concerned," he said at a press soiree on Friday night.

"It is for this that I congratulate Accra Hearts of Oak for the enviable record in winning every competition that they have entered this year," he said.

Mr. Esson-Benjamin said that although GBL's sponsorship is focused on football, the company intends to expand into less known disciplines like lawn tennis, table tennis and hockey.

Mr. Emmanuel Owusu Ansah, acting chairman of the Ghana Football Association, asked the media to stop referring to their administration as an Interim Management Committee (IMC).

He said the present three-man team of Mr Yaw La-Danso, Mr Wolanyo Agrah and himself would only be increased to six as stipulated by law to steer the affairs of Ghana soccer for the next three years.
