Ghana Airways launches new service route to the US

Accra (Greater Accra) 09 February 2001

Ghana Airways, on Thursday launched its new service route, Accra-Banjul-Baltimore-Washington DC at a ceremony at the Yumdum International Airport, Banjul, in the Gambia.

This follows a commercial agreement between Ghana Airways and the Gambia International Airlines to re-route Ghana Airways' US flights through Banjul.

The new service also forms part of Ghana Airways' strategy of developing additional gateways into Africa from the US.

On board the maiden flight to Banjul for the inaugural ceremony were Mr Fred Taylor, Head of International Relations and Alliances, Captain Joe Boakye, Deputy Director General, Technical, Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and Mrs Victoria Addy, Chairperson of the Board of Directors of Ghana Airways.

Speaking at the ceremony, Gambia's Secretary of State for Works, Communications and Information, Mr Edward Singhatey, commended the spirit of partnership forged between Ghana Airways and the Gambia International Airlines to provide the new service.

He said in a global society, co-operation is a "key element for success."

Mr Taylor said the new service is a "dream comes true" that would make Ghana Airways improve upon its business and trade avenues for the benefit of both countries.

He urged small carriers to form alliances to compete favourably with the bigger airlines.

Ghana Airways flies to 11 countries in the West Africa Sub-region and operates in 14 African countries including code-share operations with Ethiopian Airlines, South African Airlines, Nigeria Airways and Air Senegal.
