Egypt beat Ghana to square series
Egypt beat Ghana to square series
Accra
(Greater Accra) 07 February 2001
The
Egyptian under 20 team this afternoon piped their Ghanaian counterparts by a
lone goal to square up in their two match international friendly at the Accra
sports Stadium.
The
result, was a sweet revenge after they had earlier lost to the Satellites 2-1
in their first match played at the same venue on Sunday.
The
match which was characterised by a lot of midfield action saw the Egyptians
dominating the early stages of the game as they effectively marked-out their
smaller opponents to control the flow of the game.
The
only goal of the game, came in the 11th minute when FIFA referee Alex Quartey
whistled for an indirect free-kick against George Owu in post for Ghana for
holding unto the ball for more than six second. Mohamed Abdel Wahed expertly converted
it for the game's only goal.
The
Egyptians marking and swift counter attacks created a lot problems for the
Ghanaian defence and John Mensah playing as libero was forced to work extra
hard to keep his side in the game.
The
Satellites came close to an equaliser in the 29th minute when Sulley Muntari
broke free from midfield only to see his low drive whisk past the Egyptian
goalpost.
The
second half started with much more promise for the Satellites as they put some
urgency into their game and came close to equalising in the 54th and 72nd
minutes but John Cudjoe and Sulley Muntari found their shots narrowly missing the
goalpost.
The
Ghanaians in a last minute effort to win back the support of the sparse crowd
who had shifted their support to the Egyptians, put up a fight but they could
not go through the watertight defence of the Egyptians till full time.

The Ghana
Boxing Authority said it would not hesitate to sanction any ring official for
sub-standard performance, neither would it support "dubious officiating at
tournaments".
Nii
Quaye-Mensah, Chairman of GBA, gave the warning at the opening of a two-day
seminar for boxing ring officials in Accra on Tuesday.
He said
there is the need to rejuvenate the present ring officials by recruiting more
people, especially those with the right attitude.
The GBA
boss was apparently reacting to certain bizarre decisions by some judges of
late in recent times.
Just last
week, another controversial decision rocked the nation when former WBA
bantamweight champion Alfred "Cobra" Kotey was robbed in his re-fight
with Gideon "Shark"Annor in a Super featherweight contest at the
Kaneshi sports complex after their first encounter was controversially declared
a draw.
The seminar
aims at updating the knowledge of the officials and exposing them to current
trends in order to improve standards.
The first
day is for theoretical exposition and audio visual on officiating while the
second day would be for practical demonstration.
Brigadier
George Brock, Acting Chief Executive of the National Sports Council, urged the
official not to stop learning so as to be abreast with the rules of the game.
He
announced that plans are afoot for such courses and seminars to be organised
regularly in the future.
