Trader charged with possessing firearm, implements

Accra (Greater Accra) 06 February 2001

An Accra Circuit Tribunal on Monday remanded in prison custody a 28-year-old trader charged with possessing firearms and implements intended for unlawful entry.

Kweku Agyeman, who was picked up by the Police Mobile Patrol Team at about 0130 hours on December 26 at the industrial area, had in his possession a locally-manufactured pistol, 11 live bullets, a master key, a spanner, pliers, a packet of fire crackers and a key to his hotel room.

He pleaded not guilty and will reappear on February 27. The tribunal chaired by Mrs Elizabeth Anderson Yebuah ordered the police to investigate the matter very well in order to come out with the appropriate charges.

Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Edward Antwi said on December 26 last year, the Police Mobile Patrol Team met Agyeman at the North Industrial Area at about 0130 hours with a waist bag which was found to contain the items.

Chief Inspector Antwi said Agyeman denied ownership saying they belonged to one Bab, a friend he was earlier walking with.

Agyeman said his friend who was staying at Maamobi told him he was "seeing something" nearby.

The Prosecution said the police could not trace Bab at Maamobi

In her evidence Madam Gyekye told the court that when she found that the jerricans were stolen, she went to the lorry station where she saw Asare carrying one of them on his head and the other by the hand.

She said Asare was about to board a vehicle bound for Accra, but she raised the alarm and he was arrested.

The judge, Mr S. S. Appiah warned criminals to change for the better because they cannot escape the law much longer.
