The Ghana Association of Bankers on Monday, February 5, 2001, announced the following average inter bank exchange rates of the cedi equivalent to the dollar and derived rates for other major foreign currencies:

Ghana's 2000 non-traditional exports up

Ghana's exports of non-traditional products garnered 214.47 million dollars in the first half of last year, up 19.41 per cent to 179.6 million dollars over the same period in 1999, the Ghana Export Promotion Council (GEPC) said on Monday.

Performance analysis by the GEPC made available to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) said the sub-sectors of agriculture, manufacturing and handicraft dominated the export drive.

Major export destinations are the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Italy, France, Germany, Spain, Belgium, Greece and the United States. Ghana's traditional exports are gold, cocoa and timber.

Figures for the second half are still being compiled.

"The volume of exports was made possible by 2,275 exporters of 253 items compered to 1,740 exporters of 240 items within the same period of 1999," it said.

Of the total earnings, the manufacturing sub-sector contributed 167.495 million dollars (136.456 in 1999), agriculture 43.464 million dollars (40.095 million in 1999) and handicrafts 3.5 million dollars (3.06 in 1999).

Wood and wood products led the manufacturing sub-sector, earning 60.96 million dollars.

Prepared foods and beverages brought in 36.8 million dollars, followed by cocoa cake, liquor and butter with 29.4 million dollars, plywood 17.672 million dollars, sliced veneer 15.324 million dollars and builders woodwork 11.84 million dollars.

The rest are aluminium products 5.486 million dollars, palm oil 4.83 million dollars while furniture and furniture parts fetched 4.2 million dollars, and common salt 1.875 million dollars.

Horticultural products brought in 14.369 million dollars, from fresh pineapples, banana, pawpaw and fresh yams. Fish and seafood earned 9.865 million dollars, sheanut 2.62 million dollars, rabusta coffee 2.742 million dollars and cocoa waste 1.1 million dollars.

The handicraft sub-sector contributed 3.516 million dollars during the period made up of assorted handicrafts and basket-ware, the report said.
