Two fake currency dealers fined

Accra (Greater Accra) 03 February 2001

Two persons who were found packaging fake currency notes in their homes at Kwashieman in Accra were on Friday convicted by a circuit tribunal.

Philip Agyaku and Nkansah Boateng, who pleaded guilty to conspiracy and preparation to commit crime, were each fined 500,000 cedis or in default will serve six months imprisonment each with hard labour.

The tribunal chaired by Mrs Elizabeth Anderson Yebuah also bonded the accused persons to be of good behaviour for 12 months or in default go to jail for 24 months.

Inspector Joseph Anneh Kwame told the tribunal that on January 16 the police received information that some people were printing local currency at Kwashieman.

He said a team of detectives sent to investigate found Agyaku and Boateng in a room packaging pieces of paper cut to the size of 2,000-cedi notes.

Mr Kwame said another 15 bundles of paper with genuine 2,000 notes on both sides of each bundle were also found in the room.

He said when the accused persons were interrogated, they said they sell the bundles of notes to foreigners who deal in fake currencies at a discount and they in turn take them to the borders to transact business.
