Tennis- Davis Cup kicks-off on Wednesday

Accra (Greater Accra) 15 Feb 2000

The eight-nation Euro-Africa Zone four tournament of the Davis Cup kicks off at the Accra Sports Stadium tennis courts on Wednesday, 16 February.

Ghana, Azerbaijan, Mauritius and Cameroon are in group B while Algeria, Sudan, Liechtenstein and Andorra are in group A in the week- long competition.

The last time Ghana hosted the Davis Cup was in 1996 in the Euro-Africa Zone one ahead of Britain, but lost all her five matches. And for the first time since 1996, the Golden Rackets, Ghana's national tennis team, will be without its two top players, Frank Ofori and Isaac Donkor.

No official reason has been given for their removal from the team though they were in town early enough for the tournament.

A source close to the Ghana Tennis Association said they (Frank and Isaac) are to justify their inclusion before Wednesday's competition.

The official brochures for the competition released in Accra on Monday, named Ghana's team as Courage Anyidoho, Gunther Darkey, Samuel Fumi and Thomas Debrah with David Churcher as the captain.

Ghana start her campaign against Azerbaijan in the opening match on Wednesday, Algeria take on Liechtenstein, Andorra clash with Sudan and Cameroon lock horns with Mauritius, all on the same day.

The round-robin matches will end on Friday and the four top teams will play in the semi-final matches on Saturday.

The two winners in the semi-final matches will automatically qualify for Zone three next year.

The Grand finale is scheduled for Sunday, February 20.
