CAF fines Nigeria for crowd violence

Accra (Greater Accra) 9 Feb 2000

The Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) on Tuesday evening fined both the Nigerian Football Association (NFA) and the Local Organising Committee of that country five thousand dollars each for their inability to prevent soccer fans from evading the pitch after Nigeria's 2-1 victory over Senegal in their quarter-final match played at the Surulere Stadium on Monday.

A source told the GNA in Accra after CAF's executive meeting that Mr Kashimawo Laloko, a Technical Director of the NFA has been banned for six months by CAF.

Nigeria football fans evaded the pitch last Monday, when the Supper Eagles scored the second goal during extra time in their match against Senegal, apparently thinking a golden goal had been scored.

This is the second time the two local bodies has been fined for unruly behaviour of Nigerian fans in the on-going CAN 2000 being Co- hosted by Ghana.
