Teacher remanded for sexually abusing male pupil

Accra (Greater Accra), 9th February 2000

Charles Amoako Thebault, a drama teacher at Tenashie One and Four J.S.S school at Osu Ako Adjei in Accra, has been remanded in custody for allegedly having unnatural carnal knowledge of a 16-year-old boy of the school.

A source at the Women and Juvenile unit (WAJU) of the Ghana Police Service told the GNA in Accra on Tuesday that some pupils interviewed at the school confirmed that the teacher had subjected them to similar ordeals.

According to the source, the victim, who had been illegally adopted by the suspect for about three years, had been repeatedly abused sexually by the teacher.

Each time the victim was abused, he left for his mother's house saying he would not stay with the suspect any more. But whenever that happened the suspect came to plead with the mother for the boy to return.

The source said the victim could not tell his mother because he was threatened by the suspect that he would die or go mad. The suspect also suspended the sexual assault for sometime for him to get over it.

In December last year, however, the cat was let out of the bag when the suspect attempted to abuse the boy again. He fled to his mother's house as usual but this time reported it to her.

The victim's mother reported the case to the Osu Police who arrested him and referred the case to WAJU.

The source said the case has been adjourned to February 24.
