Drivers fined for violating traffic regulations

Stow away convicted

Accra (Greater Accra), 12 Feb.

27 year-old man, Osumanu Dawuda from Wenchi in Brong Ahafo who stowed away board M/V RORO Delma in Nigeria to France was yesterday fined 100,000 cedis by a circuit tribunal or in default serve one month in jail.

He was convicted on his own plea of guilty.

The prosecutor, Inspector Alice Takyiwaa said Dawuda went to Nigeria in 1998 in search of a job in Lagos.

In November 1998 the accused sneaked into the ship and hid to escape being found out. On the high sea, he ran out of food and water and, therefore, went to the kitchen to help himself.

Dawuda was arrested by the Captain of the vessel and handed over to the immigration authorities when the ship docked in Ghana.

Drivers fined for violating traffic regulations

Accra (Greater Accra), 12 Feb

A James Town Community Tribunal chaired by Mrs Ivy Heward Mills yesterday fined 26 drivers a total of 2.75 million cedis for violating traffic regulations. The fines ranged from 50,000 cedis to 200,000 cedis.

Mr Mustapha Garbah, Deputy Commissioner of Police, in charge of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU), made this known to newsmen at a day's driving course organised by the unit for the drivers who were fined by the court. He expressed regret at the increase in traffic indiscipline in Accra and advised drivers to abide by rules and regulations governing the use of roads.

Mr Garbah said the exercise, which started about four weeks ago will continue until ''we get rid of those drivers, who would not heed advice''.

The drivers were taught the correct way to drive when approaching traffic lights and the correct way to park at bus stops.
