Ashanti Goldfields continues to soar on Accra bourse

Accra (Greater Accra) 24 December 2002 - The share price of Ashanti Goldfields Limited continued to soar on the Accra Bourse, gaining another 2,000 cedis after Friday's rise of 1,193 cedis following the threat of war in Iraq, which has boosted gold prices on the world market in recent times.

Gold, the precious metal, is currently trading on the world market at 345 dollars an ounce.

Ashanti Goldfields rose by 2,000 to end trading at 22,000 cedis lifting the GSE All Share Index, the main market gauge, up by 4.27 points.

The only other equity that saw a price change, Guinness Ghana Limited, went up by four cedis at 1,050 cedis.

Traded volumes continued to be low, ending at 187,200 cedis, although considerably higher than the 21,900 shares that changed hands on Friday.

AGC made the gain despite only 100 shares of the equity changing hands. Aluworks sold the highest number of 184,000 shares on a day that shares of only four out of the 24 registered equities changed hands, as institutional investors continued to adopt a wait and see attitude.

Market capitalisation now stands at 5,644.12 billion cedis, up from 5,289.21 billion cedis on Friday. Change for the year is now 44.72 per cent.

About 140 Volta Regional projects funded from HIPC fund

Tadzewu (Volta Region) 24 December 2002 - About 140 projects are being undertaken in the Volta region with funds under the Heavily Indebted Poor Country (HIPC) initiative.

The Volta Regional Deputy Minister, Mr Kofi Dzamesi announced this at a reception organised in his honour at Tadzewu on Sunday.

He said under the HIPC initiative, each of the 12 districts in the region has been allocated one billion cedis in addition to the District Assembly Common Fund for development projects.

Mr Dzamesi said the government was committed to assisting indigenous businessmen including those in the rural areas to enable them also create conditions for improved living conditions in those areas.

He explained that the adoption of HIPC by government was simply to give the country a breather in the payment of its debts and through such savings promote development and productivity.
