Parliament approves first quarter 2002 expenditure

 

Accra (Greater Accra) 24 December 2001 - Parliament on Friday approved 3.4 trillion cedis as provisional estimate of government expenditure for first quarter 2002.

 

The package is a stop-gap measures to keep government machinery running until the next budget and appropriate bill is considered in March 2002. All 130 members present voted for the resolution.

 

Meanwhile, various bills have been approved by the house. This includes National AIDS Commission Bill, Bank of Ghana Bill and National Reconciliation Bill.

Parliament approves housing project loan

 

Accra (Greater Accra) 24 December 2001 - The majority group in Parliament on Friday managed to secure the approval of the 41.3 million dollars loan agreement meant for financing a housing project.

 

They narrowly lost the resolution earlier in the day by three votes as only 98 of them voted in favour of the resolution. According to the constitution, 101 votes are needed to carry such resolution through.

 

The supply credit agreement, to be contracted from Hycocrojek Bratislavia SA of Slovakia was reconsidered after the House has rescinded its decision on the matter.

 

A 450,000-dollar supplementary loan to be contracted from the Nordic Development Fund was approved. It would be used to settle outstanding claim to KL Contractors of Denmark. The House closed for its first session on Friday after 39 sittings and passing five bills.    

 

Papa Owusu Ankoma, leader said the majority would do their best to promote democratic interchange in the House. He criticized the Minority for over-using the walk-out strategy, which he said, does not augur well work of the House.

 

Mr. Peter Alla Adjetey, the Speaker, commended member for a good job done, but asked them, especially Ministers to be punctual in order to speed up business in the House.
