Seven Hundred and twenty nine cards shown in the season

 

Accra (Greater Accra) 14 December 2001 - Available data gathered from the secretariat of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) shows that a total of seven hundred and twenty nine cards were shown in the 2001 Star Premier League and the FA cup competitions.

 

The data gathered by GNA sports indicate that six hundred and eighty nine yellow cards and forty red cards were shown in both the league and the knockout competitions.

 

In the Star Premier league, a total of six hundred and eighty four cards were shown, and these include six hundred and forty seven yellow cards and thirty-seven red cards, while the knockout recorded forty-five bookings, which included forty yellow cards and three red cards.

 

Suhum Maxbees received the highest number of cards with a total of sixty-one which comprised sixty yellow cards and one red card in both the league and the knockout competitions.

 

A break down of the cautions and expulsions show that Maxbees had fifty-nine yellow cards in the premiership while they received one red and a yellow card during the knockout competition.

 

King Faisal who were the best behaved club in terms of the number of bookings recorded during the season got thirty-two cards, made up of thirty yellow cards and two red cards. Twenty-seven of their cautions and two expulsions occurred during the league while they had only three yellow cards in the knockout in which they played the grand finale.         

 

Three players scored a total of five hat tricks in the league. Ishmael Addo of Accra Hearts of Oak registered his hat tricks in the 7th 15th and 25th weeks against Okwawu, Maxbees and Adansiman respectively while Emmanuel Donkor also of

Accra Hearts of Oak scored a hat trick in the first week against liberty Professionals.

 

Ablade Morgan of Liberty professionals also scored a hat trick against Adansiman in their 21st league match.

Roger Miller and Marion Jones arrive in Accra

 

Accra (Greater Accra) 14 December 2001 - The celebrated Cameroonian footballer, Roger Miller and the

United States Triple world female Olympic champion Marion Jones arrived at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) in Accra on Friday for the launching of the Olympic Games Vaccine Fund in Accra on Saturday.

 

They were accompanied by two other Winter Olympic champions, who were met on arrival by the Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr Joe Aggrey.

 

Mr Aggrey was happy that the four sports celebrities associating themselves with the promotion of vaccination against the five child killer diseases.

 

The athletes told newsmen that they were happy to be in Ghana and expressed the hope that their presence would make the programme a success.

Badminton Association prepares for major competitions

 

Accra (Greater Accra) 14 December 2001 - The Badminton Association of Ghana (BAG) will organise a two-day National Senior Ranking competition at the Accra Sports Stadium on December 20 and 21.

 

The competition is to afford the coaches an opportunity to select players for the All Africa Senior Championship slated for Morocco and the Commonwealth Games scheduled to hold in Manchester next year.

 

Speaking to GNA sports on Friday, Mr. Andrew A. Ocloo the general secretary of the Association said the competitions would involve players from the ten regions of the country.

 

He said the championship is intended for senior players only and those who qualify for the final stages would be selected to form the nucleus of the new national team.

 

The general secretary said in all, sixty players are expected to take part in the men and women's singles, the men and women's doubles as well as the mixed doubles.

 

Mr. Ocloo said ten players, five each form the male and female divisions would be selected for the national teams. He said the number would be pruned down before the final selection for the two competitions.
