Tema (Greater Accra) 12 December 2001- The Pioneer Food Cannery (PFC) has dismissed 18 senior staff who laid down their tools to compel management to allow them to join the Trades Union Congress (TUC).
According to a source close to PFC, about 40 members of the senior staff at the factory at a meeting decided to join the Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU) so that they could bargain for improved conditions of service.
The source said 19 of the senior staff wrote a letter with 18 signing it, to the management that they would go on strike if they were not allowed to join the ICU.
The management, sensing danger on Monday December 3 wrote to summarily dismiss those who signed the letter and made sure that they were not allowed to enter the factory on Tuesday, December 4.
The Tema Regional Police Command was made to provide police security at the factory, as tension begun to arise among workers but the armed men were withdrawn at the weekend.
Meanwhile, the junior workers have sent warning signals to the PFC management to reverse its decision or else they would advise themselves.
