Join global fight against money laundering

 

Kumasi (Ashanti Region) 11 December 2001 - Mr Richard Addai Denteh, Deputy Ashanti Regional Manager of the Bank of Ghana (BOG), has called on banks in the country to join the global crusade to fight money laundering.

 

He asked them to be alert and "think behind every large transaction", to find out if it was out of context with the pattern of account opened or business, determine whether deposits were too regular for legitimate trading to take place and strange large cash transaction that are offered in place of cheques and drafts.

 

Any suspicion should be reported to the head offices of the banks concern to decide on what action to take, Mr Denteh told the opening of two Western Union Money Transfer service points of the ECOBANK Ghana Limited at Abrepo Junction and Ashanti New Town in Kumasi.

Market index marks time again

 

Accra (Greater Accra) 11 December 2001 - The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) All-Share Index, the main market gauge, marked time again on Monday as the bourse recorded no price change and the total number of shares traded dipped well under the 100,000 mark.

 

The GSE All-Share Index, which ended unchanged on Monday and Wednesday last week, closed at 958.54 points. There was no trading on Friday, which was a public holiday.

 

Shares traded went down from 88,800 to 65,000 shares and market capitalisation was unchanged 3,909.06 billion cedis. Only seven equities, out of the 22 listed on the bourse, sold shares. Change for the year remained at 11.72 per cent. Below are the closing prices of listed equities in cedis:
