Minority ask for reduction in fuel prices

Accra (Greater Accra) 08 December 2001 - Mr Abraham Kofi Asante, the Minority Spokesman on Energy, would on Tuesday move a motion in Parliament urging the government to reduce the price of petroleum products in line with the Petroleum Product Pricing Policy.

He said the government in increasing prices of petroleum products in February this year said it had introduced a formula that would make the commodity to automatically adjust to correspond with prevailing world market prices.

He said at the time of the increase the world market price was 21 dollars per a barrel and now it has fallen to as low as about 10 dollars a barrel.

Presenting the Business Statement for the ninth week, Papa Owusu-Ankomah, the Majority Leader said the motion would be considered alongside other businesses lined up for the House.

He said several papers would be laid including the withdrawn but substituted report of the joint committee on Finance and Work and Housing on the Supplier's Credit Agreement between Ghana and Hycoprojekt Bratislavia A.S. of Slovakia for 41.3 million dollars for financing housing development in Ghana.

Papa Owusu-Ankomah expressed regret that some committees of the House did sometimes travel to other parts of the country to honour invitations to participate in seminars, workshops and other functions without informing the leadership of the House.

"This unfortunate situation more often than not adversely affect the smooth functioning of the House especially on days which the House is expected to take major decisions".

He, therefore, asked committee chairmen to give adequate notice to the leadership and seek approval from the Speaker. The Speaker, Mr Peter Ala Adjetey endorsed the Majority Leader's concern and asked members to extend due courtesies to the House and seek permission from him before honouring such invitations.
