Osu traditional heads against appointment of acting chief

Accra (Greater Accra) 01 December 2001- Heads of four Osu quarters on Friday kicked against the appointment of Nii Ako Nortei II as Acting Osu Mantse and petitioned Nii Adote Obuor II, Acting President of the Ga Traditional Council, to withdraw the appointment letter.

The heads of Kinkawe, Ashante, Anorhor and Alata said they had taken a serious view of Nii Obuor's letter dated March 30th authorising Nii Nortei to perform statutory functions as Acting Osu Mantse.

The petitioners said they approached Nii Obuor and requested him to withdraw the letter because the appointment had created confusion in the administration of Osu but he had failed to do so.

"In the circumstances, we wish by this letter to inform you that we do not and cannot recognise Nii Ako Nortei the Second as Osu Mankralo and Acting Osu Mantse."

The said they could not recognise Nii Nortei because the Ashante Quarter of Osu had not completed the customary rites that would qualify Nii Nortei to swear the oath of office to Osuman.

The Osu Divisional Council had not formally written to Nii Obuor as the Acting President of the Ga Traditional Council to inform him that there was a new Mankralo called Nii Nortei for purposes of recognition by the Ga Traditional Council.

"The Osu Divisional Council has not written to you nor filed the appropriate papers for the gazetting of Nii Nortei as Osu Mankralo."

The petitioners said if there had to be Acting Mantse of Osu it had to be decided by the appropriate stool authorities constituted by the four quarters.

They warned that if Nii Obuor did not withdraw Nii Nortei's appointment letter "we will be compelled to advise ourselves appropriately".
