Farmer accuse of
murdering creditor
Alfa (Volta) 20 December 2000
A 52-year-old farmer on Tuesday
appeared before the Aflao Circuit Court for killing a 75-year-old woman who was
demanding a debt of 18,000 cedis.
Kofitse Aki, also a herbalist and
palm-wine tapper from Penyi in the Ketu district, told the packed court that he
was moved by the devil to slash the woman's throat.
Aki, whose plea was not taken, was
remanded in prison custody to reappear on January 17, 2001.
The court, presided over by Mr
Francis Opoku heard that Aki, alias "I will chop some", bought six
palm trees for 18,000 cedis from the victim, Madam Georgina Senanu sometime
last month but refused to pay despite persistent demands by the old lady.
Then on December 15, at about 7.30
am, Madam Senanu approached the accused again for her money. Aki told her to
follow him to the bush where he kept some money.
The prosecution said the
unsuspecting woman agreed and went with him to the bush where Aki attacked her
and slashed her throat with a sharp knife.
Aki came home and requested two
friends, Mawuli Zorklui and Charles Amegbletor both tappers, to go and tap his
palm-wine while he attended to some patients. He said the two men saw the body
of Madam Senanu and reported to the police.
Police investigations led to the
arrest of the accused who, confessed to the crime.

Blacksmith hammers teacher with iron bar
Nkoranza (Brong Ahafo) 20 December 2000
A 40-year-old blacksmith is standing trial at the Nkoranza district tribunal for allegedly causing harm to Mr. Samuel Atakora, a teacher of the Nkoranza El-Rapha Shalom Preparatory School.
Kwaku Adjei was alleged to have hit Mr Atakora on the head with an iron bar last Friday.
Narrating the incident to the Ghana News Agency on Monday, Mr. Opoku Donyina, Proprietor of the school, said Mr Atakora had gone to collect 32,000 cedis being arrears in school fees of Adjei's ward when the latter got annoyed and hit the teacher with the weapon.
Mr. Donyina explained that Adjei withdrew his ward from the school about three months ago without any tangible reason and without paying his ward's outstanding fees.
All efforts to collect the fees from the accused proved futile so Mr Atakora last Friday went to the workplace of the accused to collect it.
Adjei, who took offence of the teacher's demand picked an iron bar and struck the teacher on the head.
Mr Atakora fell unconscious and was rushed to the Saint Theresa's Hospital at Nkoranza.
Adjei bolted after committing the offence but he was arrested last Saturday.
The accused has been granted bail to appear again before the tribunal.
