GBL signs 870 million cedis deal with GFA

Ghana
Breweries Limited (GBL) on Thursday signed a new sponsorship deal with the
Ghana Football Association (GFA) to facilitate the organisation of the National
Premier League from next year.
The
new package, worth 870 million cedis, is 45 percent above the previous one,
which expired at the end of the 2000 league season. It will last for five years
- 2001 - 2005.
At
a brief ceremony at the GFA secretariat, Ahaji Nurudeen Jawula, chairman of the
GFA signed for the association while Mr Esson Benjamin, chief executive of GBL
signed for the sponsors.
Alhaji
Jawula described the deal as a good one and pledged the GFA's commitment to use
the money to develop football throughout the country.
He
said it is his wish that the good relationship between the GFA and GBL
continues for many years.
The
GFA chairman said the association would meet with the Professional League Board
(PLB) to work out modalities for the disbursement of the money.
Mr
Esson Benjamin, Chief Executive of GBL, described the package as the biggest in
sports sponsorship in the country.
He
said GBL would decide on the brand name which will be identified with the
sponsorship and communicate it to the GFA before the new league season gets
underway.
He
said in addition to the package, GBL would also commit some money towards the
league by way of radio and television advertisements.
The
Chief Executive said GBL is in sports sponsorship to create and sustain the
goodwill of the consumer and improve its corporate status.
Mr
Esson Benjamin said GBL would cultivate a healthy relationship with the media
to move the game forward.
