Two sentenced for threat of death

Accra (Greater Accra) 23 Dec. '99

An Accra Circuit Tribunal on Wednesday sentenced Julius Selasie Bonsu and Frimpong Manso, both unemployed, who called themselves "Red Tigers," to 12 months imprisonment in hard labour, for threatening the lives of unsuspecting members of the public.

The tribunal chaired by Mrs Elizabeth Anderson-Yebuah ordered that each of the accused persons should be bonded to be of good behaviour for two years or in default, they will each go to prison for six months in hard labour.

Bonsu, 19, and Manso alias Lumba, 23, pleaded guilty to threat of death and they were accordingly convicted.

Prosecuting, Police Inspector Joseph Anneh-Kwame said the complainant, Madam Laura Quaye, is an Air Hostess and lives at Awudome in Accra, while the accused persons are unemployed and have no proper place of abode in Accra.

The prosecutor said on 29 November, this year, Madam Laura returned from a trip to find that a hand written letter, threatening to burn her and her property was posted on her boundary wall.

Inspector Anneh-Kwame said the letter indicated that the complainant should deposit two million cedis in her house for somebody to collect, adding that, failure to do so, the group, called Red Tigers, will burn her together with her property.

According to the prosecutor Madam Laura rushed to the police station to make a report and at about 10:30 hours the next day, when Bonsu went to the house to collect the money, he was arrested.

Inspector Anneh-Kwame said during investigations, Bonsu mentioned Manso and others who are on the run as accomplices and led the Police to arrest Manso.

The prosecutor said further that Bonsu also led the Police to a house at Kaneshie, where a similar letter was posted on the wall.

The landlord, who confirmed the story, said he removed the poster and destroyed it.
