NPP will cater for the youth - Kufuor

Tema (Greater Accra) 21 Dec. '99

A government of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will implement programmes that would give the youth employment and the opportunity to enjoy life with dignity, Mr John A. Kufuor, NPP Presidential candidate said at rally at Tema on Sunday.

He said the present government has failed the youth by not having a definite policy to cater for their wellbeing.

The government has not expanded educational facilities, especially at the tertiary level, thus denying many qualified students the opportunity to further their education.

The NDC government has messed up the economy and has brought untold hardships on to the people who cannot make ends meet.

He said the NDC is not capable of managing the economy as seen in their inability to pay cocoa farmers on time and the continuous fall of the cedi against major currencies.

Mr Kufuor said an NPP government would bring sanity into government expenditure and make Ghana the real gateway to West Africa.

The NPP Presidential candidate said his government would work with the Constitution and avoid the arbitrariness of the present government.

The NPP has no plan to bring back the aliens compliance order, he said and asked members of the Zongo community to cause the arrest of anyone, who goes round to threaten them.

Mr Kufuor asked NPP supporters to intensify their campaign to ensure that the party wins the 2000 elections and in order to redeem the people from their suffering.

Mr Kufuor said the party believes in the peaceful transfer of power through the ballot box and advised supporters to eschew violence before, during and after the elections.

Mr Kwasi Afrifa, MP for Adansi East commended the Police Service for the way it handled the five opposition parties anti government demonstration in Accra, recently, even in the face of inadequate logistics.

He said there is every indication that if the Rawlings' government gives them the free hand to operate, they would prove to Ghanaians that they are professionals in their own right.

Mr Afrifa assured the government that they would give praise where it is due and will call it to order when it goes wrong, adding, "if the government fails to listen to our call to do the right things we will take to the streets".

He said the Electoral Commission (EC) would soon open the voters' register to enable those that did not register or are now 18 years to register.

Mr Afrifa said it is good news that the photo identification cards would be extended to all other areas and called on the government to release the rest of the money meant for the exercise to make it a reality.

Madam Theresa Tagoe, MP for Ablekuma South criticised President Rawlings for not showing sympathy towards the recent serial killing of 20 women in Accra.

She said "in the year 2000 elections we will check and avoid politics of misinformation, intimidation and undue harassment hoping that victory will be on our side".

Mr Ishmel Ashietey, MP for Tema East repeated his accusation that there is corruption and stealing of public funds at the Tema Municipal Assembly (TMA), which he said, has suspended him.

"I have through my reports forced TMA to utilise the taxpayers' money for the construction of gutters, but I still say that Tema is filthy and the assembly should take this up".

He said he has sent TMA to court, about his suspension, adding, "I will continue to make sure that all stolen monies are retrieved".

Mr Buadi Mensah, MP for Obuasi said, he has not seen any development project that the NDC government has initiated. "At best they have succeeded in selling all government industries and cannot even account for the money they have received".

He said Ghanaians are easily intimidated and because they are afraid the NDC is able to rig elections, adding that without rigging, the NDC could never win any elections.

No more disabilities, DCE

Ajumako(Central Region) 21 Dec. '99

Mr Kobena Musa Biney, District Chief Executive for Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam said on Friday that the days when the disabled were regarded as liabilities to the society are gone.

The public should therefore give the disabled all necessary assistance to enable them to develop their talents and contribute to nation building.

Mr Biney was closing a two-day in-service training programme for 94 unit committee members in the Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam constituency.

Organised by the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development, the training programme known as Community Based Rehabilitation, is designed to guide the participants to support the disabled to improve their lives.

Mr Jonathan Gyau, the District Social Welfare Officer, said the problem of the disabled is not the responsibility of only the department but that of every Ghanaian.

He therefore asked the participants to create awareness in their communities about this situation and to mobilise resources to train people with disabilities.

He said the disabled should not be treated as outcasts but they should instead be involved in day to day activities in the communities for them to feel that they are part of the community.

New telecommunication equipment installed

Accra (Greater Accra) 21 Dec. '99

Amalgamated Network Systems (ANS), a telecommunication provider, on Sunday installed a second Broadband Base Station for Ghana.

It will aid efficient data telecommunications services to local companies and extend coverage in Accra, Mr Kwaku Boadu, Chief Executive Officer of ANS, said.

The station, the second in Accra and the third in the country, was installed on the rooftop of the Ghana commercial Bank offices at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle.

The station can be used for distance learning and telemedicine, aid rapid deployment of secure, reliable turnkey communications infrastructure, provide support for data network, internet access, video conferencing and private voice systems.

It can also provide a network to support the banking industry and businesses.

The Broadband Base Network, which was recently introduced in Ghana, is a collaboration between ANS and Spike Technologies (USA).

It aims at providing cost effective solutions to data telecommunication, which would improve performance in reliability, security, capacity, speed and ease deployment of data.

The first base station is situated at Legon in Accra while the second was installed at Kumasi last week.

The second base station in Accra would serve as a backup to the first and allow customers in low -lying areas to be easily reached.

The ANS Broadband Network now covers Accra, Kumasi, Obuasi, Takoradi and Tarkwa.

Expansion of the network to cover Cape Coast, Prestea, Tamale, Bolgatanga, Sunyani and Ho is scheduled to be completed before March 2000.

Mr Boadu said the Broadbase Network would be cost effective to customers and is fully Y2K compliant.

Koforidua (Eastern Region) 21 Dec. '99

Ghanaians waste 160 megawatts of power annually - VRA official

Koforidua (Eastern Region) 21 Dec. '99

Every year, Ghanaians waste about 160 megawatts of electricity, the equivalent of power generated annually by the Kpong Hydroelectric Dam.

Mrs Ellen Essifie, Acting Director of Organisational Services of the Volta River Authority (VRA), made this known at Koforidua on Monday when she presented a cheque for two million cedis to the Eastern Regional branch of the Ghana National Trust Fund (GNTF).

She called on the GNTF to intensify public education on its activities to attract more donations from individuals and institutions.

Ms Patience Adow, Eastern Regional Minister, who received the cheque on behalf of the Trust, thanked the VRA for donating annually to the fund.

NDC is not behind Kejetia stores

Kumasi (Ashanti Region) 21 Dec. '99

The Ashanti Regional Executive of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has expressed shock and disgust at rumours that the party is behind the construction of stores at the Kejetia lorry terminal.

A statement in Kumasi signed by the Regional Chairman, Mr Philip Edward Kwabena Antwi, said NDC has nothing to do with the stores.

It described the rumour as false and reprehensible, adding that "we do not want to believe that this is yet another orchestrated plot to incite public anger and hatred towards our party, its membership and supporters in Kumasi".

The statement called on the people of the metropolis to ignore what it described as "the mischief-inspired rumour".

In another statement, Mr Antwi denied allegations in certain opposition circles that, he masterminded the transfer of Mr Kojo Yankah, former Ashanti Regional Minister.

He said "dirty politics" have never been attractive to him adding that for sometime now he has been out of public view after undergoing medical treatment abroad.

All NPP branches told to set up campaign teams

Techiman (Brong Ahafo) 21 Dec. '99

The Brong Ahafo Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Kwadwo Yeboah Fordjour, has called on the various branches of the party to reactivate their organisational structures and set up campaign teams to enable the party win the next elections.

At the moment not a single branch out of the 21 constituency branches in the region is working effectively, he pointed out, and warned of a humiliating defeat in next year's elections if they fail to reorganise for the task ahead.

Mr. Yeboah-Forduor was speaking at the delegates' conference of the Techiman branch of the party at Techiman at the weekend to launch a special coupon printed by the party to raise funds for its activities.

He called on the executives of the various branches to take the recruitment and training of polling agents for the next elections seriously to forestall electoral fraud and rigging to enhance the chances of the party winning the elections.

A former constituency chairman of the party and a patron, Mr Donkor Boateng, urged members who would be recruited as polling agents to be fearless and dedicated in the discharge of their duties during the elections.

Dr Opoku Agyeman, Chairman of the Constituency's Council of Patrons said the party derives its strength from its democratic nature.

This, he noted, has allowed the party to maintain its unity and prevented the creation of any personality cult in spite of the existence of divergent views.

Mr Andrews Kwasi Oppong of the Council of Elders said the party could not win the last elections mainly as a result of lack of funds.

He, therefore, urged members to send the coupons to every corner of the district for maximum patronage.

A 17-member interim management committee was constituted with Mr Kwabena Adom as its chairman to help re-organise and re-energise the party for the next elections.

Anti-bush fire campaigns not achieving results - Osei-Wusu

Wa (western Region) 21 Dec. '99

Mr David Osei-Wusu, Upper West Regional Minister, on Monday said the annual anti-bushfire campaigns were not achieving results because most of the target communities are not prepared to abandon the practice through persuasion or education.

He has, therefore, called on the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), district assemblies and related agencies to apply the laws to ensure that the practice is eradicated from the society.

Addressing the fourth ordinary meeting of the Wa District Assembly at Wa, he said, "launching of these campaigns are becoming cosmetic and we have to look for alternative methods that people will adopt for farming and shea nut picking without burning the bush".

"What are the numerous fire volunteers doing in the communities," he queried, adding that "from next year, I will not attend any anti-bush fire launching ceremony and I will ensure that no money is spent on such a purpose in the region".

He said, operation cow-leg, currently going on the northern border regions, was not aimed at driving aliens away, explaining that the herdsmen were undesirable aliens, who were involved in activities no Ghanaian living in their countries of origin would ever dream of engaging in.

Alhaji Ali Seidu Pelpuo, Wa District Chief Executive, said 1,700 herds of cattle belonging to four alien herdsmen have been expelled with their owners from the district since the second phase of the "Operation cow-leg" started two weeks ago.

In his report to the assembly, he announced that the assembly has so far received 579.4 million cedis, out of its share of 1.14 billion cedis of the common fund, which includes the last quarter allocation of last year.

Four hundred million cedis have been voted under the Village Infrastructure Project for the construction of stores and stalls in the Wa Central Market.

Other projects earmarked, include the construction of two agro-processing facilities at a cost of 70 million cedis, procurement of ten pairs of donkeys and their carts at 13 million cedis for farmers and a credit facility of 60 million cedis for 20 farmers' groups.

Transport unions dissociate themselves from driver's action

Kumasi (Ashanti Region) 21 Dec '99

The three main transport operators in the Ashanti region have dissociated themselves from the strike action undertaken by a section of drivers in the Kumasi metropolis on December 14 to 20.

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union of the Trades Union Congress, the Progressive Transport owners Association and the Co-operative Transport Union described the action as acts of "hooligans."

They said the blockade of streets and entry points in the city, the harassment of drivers and the travelling public and burning of tyres on roads were illegal and unacceptable.

In a communiqué issued after a meeting with the Ashanti Regional Minister, Mr Samuel Nuamah-Donkor, the executive of the three unions said they took a very serious view of the "actions by the hooligans as drawing the names of our recognised unions into disrepute".

The communiqué signed by Mr Aaron Boakye, Regional vice-chairman of GPRTU,

Mr Micheal Ambrose Appiah, Regional chairman of PROTOA and Nana Kwakye Ababio, Regional chairman of CTU, warned that "any group of hooligans who will take the law into its own hands should be dealt with by the security agencies according to the laws of the land".

The three unions therefore assured the general public that their members will continue to render uninterrupted services and that they should therefore go about their duties without fear.

They also assured their members that consultations were going on with the relevant agencies to resolve any outstanding issues arising out of the recent increases in fuel prices.

Speaking at the meeting, Mr Nuamah-Donkor said the government regarded the

various transport unions as partners because about 98 per cent of the people depend on public transport.

He said although drivers were free to express themselves in accordance with the Constitution, what was happening in Kumasi was unacceptable since it retarded progress and the "government will not allow lawlessness to reign."

Mr Nuamah-Donkor asked the unions to set up their own spare parts, tyres, batteries and other accessories shops and pledged the support of the Regional Co-ordinating Council in this direction.

He said with the present free market economy, it would be very difficult for the government to regulate prices.

He asked the three unions to work in close collaboration with the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) and to use its stickers as well as badges of the various unions for easy identification.

The Regional Minister warned that with immediate effect, any driver "who spills oil on the streets will be surcharged for the destruction of the road."

He warned drivers not to repair faults on their vehicles on the roads.
