Ex-Minister disagrees with League clubs association
Tough start for Kotoko - paper
Sunyani (Brong Ahafo Region) 31 August 2001 -
The Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) and other stakeholders may
disagree, but the reality on the ground is that government may continue to be
involved in the appointment of FA chairmen in the country, the bi-weekly
Graphic Sports quotes ex-Sports Minister, E.T. Mensah as saying.
The ex-Minister who was talking to the paper at
Sunyani said to him, the involvement of government in the appointment of FA
chairmen cannot be discontinued because government has a big stake in the
overall development of football in the country.
The former Minister's position certainly is a
variance with the current position of Ghalca and other stakeholders who are
seeking the review of SMCD 54, a clause of which gives the Ministry of Youth
and Sports the mandate to nominate two people onto the Management Board of the
GFA, one of who is elected as chairman.
By that mandate, the interference of the GFA
has always been anticipated and dammed by the FA itself, Ghalca and others.
But in the view of Mr E.T. Mensah, government
deserves that mandate to appoint the FA boss because it does not only fund
football, but also has a large stake in its development.

Kumasi (Ashanti region) 31 August 2001 - The
Asante Kotoko Express writes that the 2001 Star Premier League has definitely
reached its crunch moments where it will be a make or break affair for those
who are vying for the league title and those whose objective for the season his
been limited to putting up a ferocious fight against relegation, the monster
that plunges clubs into Ghana's soccer wilderness.
According
to the Express, since the 1997 league season when only two goals separated the
eventual winner of the league from the runner-up, the competition has been
reduced to a one horse race and simultaneously robbing it of some excitement
and thrills. But if the current standings on the league table at the end of the
first round is anything to go by, then soccer enthusiasts who throng the
various league centers to watch matches are assured that they would have their
monies worth barring conveniences.
The neck to neck fight between Kumasi Asante
Kotoko and arch-rivals, Accra Hearts of Oak for the championship will offer
followers of both clubs the opportunity to recall with nostalgia the 1989/90
National First Division League when both sides were in the reckoning for the
title with former Kotoko brilliant striker Joe Debrah and the late Shame Quaye
dazzling soccer fans with their brand of soccer while churning out myriad
debates among followers of the game.
The Kotoko Express says if the two sides keep
up with this strong contest for the title, Ghana soccer would be the ultimate
winner.
