Selormey appeals against ruling, hearing slated for September 10

Accra (Greater Accra) 31 August 2001 - The case in which Victor Selormey, a former Deputy Finance Minister, is charged with fraudulently causing loss of 1.3 million dollars to the state, was on Friday adjourned to September 12 following an appeal filed by the defence against a ruling by the Fast Track Court.

The court, presided over by Justice Sam G. Baddoo, adjourned proceedings to enable Selormey to pursue the appeal, which has been slated for hearing on September 12 at the Court of Appeal.

Selormey, who has pleaded not guilty to two counts of conspiracy and fraudulently causing financial loss to the state, is on a 1.5 billion-cedi bail with two sureties to be justified.

The appeal, which was filed by his counsel, Johnny B Quashie-Idun, said the judge erred in law when he ordered that the accused, instead of any of the three defence witnesses who testified on the CD-rom, should tender it in evidence.

The court again erred when it refused to allow Sam Awortwi, Commissioner of Police in charge of the Legal Department and who testified for the prosecution, to tender a contract document signed by Selormey and a Ghanaian consultant who provided the CD-rom for a proposed Court Computerisation Project.

Selormey said it was unlawful for the judge to refuse any of the defence witnesses to tender the two documents.
