College to undertake tennis talent hunt

Accra (Greater Accra) 29 August 2001

The Winneba Sports College Tennis Academy would soon embark on a talent hunt for the sport if the interest and progress shown by the students continue over the next few years.

Mr George Dasoberi, Acting Director of the college said during a familiarisation tour to the college that after its first year of establishment, a boy and girl of the academy were selected by the Ghana Tennis Association to represent the country in the ITF youth programme recently held in Ghana and Togo respectively.

Mr Dasoberi told the GNA in an interview that the non-residential academy, which was set up with 15 boys and five girls, now has about 70 to 80 pupils.

He said after the initial intake, the authorities organised a tennis jamboree for over 400 children from Winneba and its surrounding towns to select children within the ages of 9-13.

The Acting Director said the children were put under the care of qualified coaches from the University College of Education to properly harness and develop their talents.

He said the college which boasts of eight standard courts, organises an annual ITF level one and two tennis course for the coaches aimed at raising their standards for the development of the game.

Mr Dasoberi said their efforts have already started yielding results as the current national under-14 girl champion and her runner up as well as the team representing the country in the Benin and Togo tournaments are all students of the Academy.

He said the academy has won 10 out of the 13 singles tournaments organised between tennis players in Accra and those of the academy.
