Men urged to help women attain great heights
Accra (Greater Accra) 28 August 2001
Hawa Yakubu, Minister of Tourism on Monday called on Ghanaian men to help propel women to heights that hitherto were the preserve of men.
Gender balance could not be attained until men were able to recognise women as equal partners and help them get to levels that they desire to reach, Mad. Yakubu said when she opened "Dyssy Studios", an art gallery and floral shop at Teshie in Accra.
Dyssy studio was born out of the dream of a female sculptor, painter and florist, Mrs Gladys Adinyira Wuaku, to develop an environment where artists from all over the world could come and work.
It also provides an environment for artists to learn from each other, issues relating to the visual arts.
She said culturally women's role relegated them to the background or restricted them in their choice of professions.
"Men have to start encouraging their wives, sisters and mothers to take up professions that would help them compete with men everywhere, such as happens in the developed world.
"If Ghanaian men would not help liberate their women from the culturally stereotype professions, then women cannot become the equal partners that the world is agitating for," she said
