Dr Busia's vision for improvement in Africa must be pursued-Aliu
Accra (Greater Accra) 22 August 2001
Vice President Aliu Mahama on Monday said the vision of Dr Kofi Abrefa Busia for improvement in Africa and the world must be remembered and pursued.
He said: "As a great teacher and leader one whose life invoked greatness in others, Dr Busia's vision for an improved Africa and indeed the world must be remembered and carried forward."
Vice President Mahama was opening a weeklong exhibition on the life and works of Dr Busia, Prime Minister of Ghana in the Second Republic, to commemorate his death about 23 years ago.
The exhibition, mounted by the Busia Foundation at its offices at Osu, displays photographs of his early life, career, political life from the 1950's to 1972, some of his clothes and other items used during his lifetime.
He said the Foundation's establishment represented a living and lasting memory of one of the great sons of the nation to carry on with his vision and torch of democracy, good governance, civic education and respect for human rights.
"It exists to help us to remember not simply one man but more especially what he stood for and the sacrifices made by his generation of noble sons and daughters to create this nation." Alhaji Mahama added.
B.J. da Rocha, a leading member of the NPP who chaired the function, said the exhibition was an instrument by which the vision of Dr Busia was being brought to the notice of a new generation of Ghanaians.
Dr Busia was only known in books, he stated and suggested that efforts should be made to make him known to the youth in more practical terms.
