Mother prays court to extend sentence on her son

Accra (Greater Accra) 16 August 2001

An Accra Circuit Tribunal on Wednesday sentenced Maxwell Agyemang, a driver, to 36 months' imprisonment for threatening to kill her mother with a stick.

Initially, the tribunal chaired by Mr Ziblim Imoro, sentenced Agyemang to 12 months imprisonment but the convict's mother, Madam Monica Ampomah, 56, who said she wanted her son to come out of prison as a reformed person, prayed the tribunal to extend the sentence.

"My son had warned that if he is not sentenced to life imprisonment he would return to kill me," Madam Ampomah said.

Agyemang, 35, pleaded guilty to threat of death.

Prosecuting Police Chief Inspector Joseph K. Adu said the Mother, who is a trader, lives with her son at Tantra Hill in Accra.

Whenever Agyemang needed money he went to his mother to collect some but on August 10 she could not afford the 100,000 cedis he demanded and he threatened to kill her.

Agyemang rejected 25,000 cedis the mother offered him. He pushed her onto a table, picked two big sticks and attempted to hit her. The mother then collected 25,000 cedis from someone and added it to her 25,000 cedis and gave to her son before he released her.

She later made a report to the Police.

Court orders Electricity Company to restore power to consumer

Accra (Greater Accra) 16 August 2001

An Accra High court presided over by Mr Justice Ebiasah, on Tuesday, advised the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to desist from disconnecting consumers without notice or illegally.

The court gave the advice when it ordered the Company to restore power to the offices of Kwaku Ansa-Asare, a lawyer at Adabraka in Accra.

The court awarded five million cedis costs against ECG for entering appearance out of time.

In another development, another High Court, presided over by Mr Justice Yaw Apau, gave judgement in favour of Mr Ansa-Asare against Ghana Telecom for wrongful disconnection of his telephone two years ago.

Mr Ansa-Asare is claiming 500 million damages against Ghana Telecom and one billion cedis against the ECG for illegal and wrongful disconnection.

Notorious criminal in police grips

Goaso (Brong Ahafo) 16 August 2001

The Police at Goaso have arrested a notorious criminal who had been terrorising residents of Goaso and its environs for the past three years through the forcible seizure of their monies and goods.

Prince Asare Bediako, alias Kofi Tororo, who had bragged that no policeman could effect his arrest, was apprehended at his hideout in a dawn operation on Sunday.

A police source said 14 dockets, including one on his latest crime in which he used a pair of scissors to inflict multiple wounds on a victim who refused to surrender his money to him, have been prepared.

It said police have sent signals to the various stations throughout the country to ascertain if Bediako has other criminal records.

A large crowd besieged the Goaso Community Tribunal on Monday to catch a glimpse of the suspect when he was brought before it.

His plea was not taken and was remanded for one week to enable the police to complete investigations.

Police sources said Bediako recently attacked two policemen at Goaso main station when he attempted to free two convicts who were being sent to the Sunyani Prison to serve their jail sentences, and bolted.
