Marathon race to usher in Aboakyer festival

The first ever marathon race as part of the Aboakyer festival for the people of Winneba will take place at Winneba on the last Saturday in April next year.
The event, which is open to citizens from Winneba and other parts of the country was initiated by the Effutu Traditional Council and will cover a distance of 42 kilometres.
The Omanhene of the area, Neenyi Ghartey VII, said this at the weekend when he inaugurated an 11-member planning and sub-committees the event at the National Sports College at Winneba.
Members of the committee include Mr George B. Dazoberi, Director of the college as Chairman, Dr.E. Owusu-Ansah, Deputy Chief, Sports Development officer of the National Sports Council, Dr Nii Adjei Adjetey, District Director of Health Services, Mr J.Y. Danso, District Police Commander and Mr B.K. Nketsiah, District Fire Officer.
Neenyi Ghartey said he was motivated by the Olympic Day Run event, which took place at Winneba, and hoped the event would be a permanent feature.
