Bolgatanga (Upper East) 07 August 2001
Food prices at the Bolgatanga central market have doubled as compared to the situation last year, a Ghana News Agency survey has shown.
The survey conducted over the weekend covered the staples - the root crops, cereals, grains, legumes and plantain.
A bag of late millet, which sold between 100,000 cedis and 120,000 cedis during the same period last year, now sells at between 200,000 and 250,000 cedis. A bowl of millet sells between 6,000 and 7,000 cedis compared to 3,000 cedis last year.
The price of a maxi-bag of maize ranges between 160,000 cedis and 200,000 cedis, whiles a bag of groundnuts is between 400,000 cedis and 450,000 cedis depending on the source of supply.
An average size of yam sells between 8,000 cedis and 10,000 cedis and one finger of plantain sells at 1,000 cedis or 1,500 cedis.
The traders attributed the high prices to the unfavourable rainfall pattern at the beginning of the current farming season, which has delayed the harvesting of the early millet and other food crops.
They said the high price of plantain, cassava and yam was largely due to the high cost of transportation.
